If we make the playoffs this year, it's going to be darn close. Every point will matter. And Ramo is costing us points today. He can't be our goalie any longer if we want a shot at the big dance. I'm fine for being patient and what not, we're now 6 starts in and he's running a 3.49% GAA and a 0.888 Sv%. It's garbage. I'm sorry but it is. Those aren't NHL quality numbers even on a bad defensive team. Yes, he only allows one soft goal a night. Sorry. Unfortunately that's cost us a few points already, starting with 1 last night at least. We were the better team, he needed to rise to the occassion and at least attempt to match Bernier's effort. He didn't have to though, we outshot the Leafs 2:1. Yet he still couldn't come up with it. It's time to move on. He had a shot. All he has proved is that he is playing exactly at the level of his last NHL stint, where he proved he was incapable of playing in this league. I want to make the playoffs guys. It won't happen with this guy.

If we still had Gio in the line up, I think at this point I'd be calling for us to make a deal to acquire Hiller or Elliott. We should be giving these kids a chance to win games. Our goaltending is a joke right up there with Edmonton's. It's not fair to our young prospects to be going out there busting it to be losing games due to goaltending. Yes, our defense stinks too. But we can quickly solve our goaltending problem with one quick phone call. We are 3-4 players from building an NHL quality defense group. But without Gio this ship is sunk for the year anyway. Send Monahan off to the WJHC and put Bear in the AHL to go win some games and redevelop confidence. All I know is with this kind of outcome despite the effort, these kids are going to lose faith in their ability to win just like the Oiler's young guys have. You can't build a team piecemeal, starting with forwards, than defense, then goalies. It needs to be done together in a cohesive push. Otherwise, you get the Oilers. That's the direction we're going.

He was as bad before though. He's not some rookie we're testing out. He's a veteran that is trying to prove he is as awful as the first time he flunked out of the league. We haven't really seen that yet. He's been insufficent in all but one game. He is living up to his broader sample size of not being an NHL calibre goalie. Ramo is a goalie with 52 NHL games. His Sv%/GAA has regressed even worse than the pitiful level it was at (and Tampa Bay was weak defensively then too). This is not a rookie. This is an experienced goalie with 52 games of insufficent ability to play in the NHL. He needs to show consistency in a good way in a hurry or he should be done (though he won't be, because Feaster offered him some absurd deal). If he plays like he did in the the one good game for 5 or 6 in a row, then maybe you have an NHL goalie. I've seen no evidence whatsoever of NHL consistency from him.
  4. David Jones back in the lineup tonight. Wooo! Three full lines!

I don't think we were in the running on Bernier or Bishop because Feaster wrongly assumed a former NHL washout turned middling KHL goalie would somehow become an elite force. You can see it in the contract. It's easily one of the worst contracts the Flames have signed in years. $5.5M for a guy that that couldn't play in the NHL the first time and hasn't proved anything since? Really? So yes, all the eggs are in the Ramo basket from Feaster's perspective. Likely one of the big reasons why Burke is now here to guide his little assistant... oops, I mean the GM... in the right direction. Ramo's play (small sample, I agree) has suggested to me he is at best an NHL backup and likely better off in the AHL. No upgrade on JMac. What I want to see is Berra get some games at the NHL level. I think he has more high end potential, though a bit more risk too (could end up like a Karlsson). But at least he's on a contract sized appropriately for his track record. The Ramo deal is just absurd. Here is how the contract discussion went down with Ramo: In private: Ramo: "So, agent, how much can I expect in a deal with the Flames?" Agent: "Well, as an unproven guy, maybe $750k to $800k on a one year." Ramo: "Ok, sounds good, good opportunity for me to prove myself." Feaster calls in: Feaster: "Hi guys, let's get a deal done here." Agent: "Sure, let's see what you have in mind." Feaster: "Let's start with $5.5M over two years, one way." Agent: "DONE!" Feaster hangs up: Ramo: "Are you freaking kidding me!?!??!?" Agent: "You better send me a big tip for this one kid."

Feaster gave Ramo $5.5M. He'll play 80+ games over the next two years regardless, Feaster's job is dependant upon it. At least half the games. Watch for it.

He didn't have a good preseason. He was downright awful in the Edmonton game. He had an ok game against the Rangers. And he wasn't great against Washington, he was decent yet allowed two softies. Ramo hasn't been better than JMac. I could understand someone arguing they have been similar, but Ramo has not been better. Hartley doesn't make roster decisions, he makes line up decisions. Roster decisions rest with Feaster (until Burke takes that away too). I'm sure Hartley has a lot of influence, but Feaster has the power to cover his butt. It's not a salary cap issue, it's a oh crap I paid an ok at best goalie $5.5M.

Ramo is on the big team because Feaster needs to look good for signing him to an absurd contract. Hartley doesn't get to play Berra because Feaster won't swap him in for Ramo. It's not about Hartley's favourites or who should be in the NHL. It's about a stupid contract that Feaster signed. Again. Look at Viktor Faskth, a great comparable for Ramo. He got $1M for 1 year. That's what you get when trying to show you can play the big man's game. Then, after he was fantastic last year, he got $2.9 x 2. Feaster was so determined to show that one of his "best outside the NHL" players was great that he signed Ramo to the big deal before he proved a damn thing in the league. He got the Faskth deal without playing like Faskth. Now we're stuck with a goalie that's not very good on a $5.5M deal that Feaster needs to protect in order to make himself look good. And you wonder why Burke is here? Hmm...

Or, the other explanation: Feaster screwed up again and Ramo has been a bust all camp. Unfortunately the $5M contract forces his hand so Ramo has to play with the big club. Ramo hasn't shown me he's better than JMac. Let the better goalie play. I don't think either will be here after 2 seasons, max. If anything we should be frustrated we aren't seeing Berra.

Columbus was one of the best defensive teams in the league last year and their goalie won the Vezina, so.... yeah.

I dropped my season tix because of how poorly we were treated during the lockout. That's why many are probably cancelling. I'm just as interested in the team, just less interested in supporting the commercial aspect.

I thought Berra looked pretty shakey last night. In fact, he reminded me a lot of Karlsson, in both style and faults. He's a big guy, but isn't very fast and seems prone to making stupid mistakes. The one positive of Berra is it seems like the guy can play the puck at a high level. I like that in a goalie.

Did I not hear on the FAN this week that Feaster was unimpressed with JMac's conditioning? I can't find a link or anything, maybe I'm mistaken.

I doubt ownership is going to plunk their $2.7M prize Ramo in the AHL. The guy getting paid will play. Ramo will start.

Berra has shown me, in one game (World Champs) that he could steal a game from the world's best. Doesn't mean much, but he's been good in his limited sample against NHL level talent. Ramo has proven he cannot play in the NHL once... yes, he was decent in the KHL (but not really the best). Could he turn it around? Of course he could. But don't count on it. Either way, we gave up next to nothing for them so who cares. Our future goalies are Brossoit and Gillies. Not anyone in the net this season. Ramo + Berra + MacD are just a long shot at a patchwork, short term solution.

    Goaltending

That's been my point all along. There is a reason why Ramo and Berra didn't play in the NHL. There is a massive cliff between Europe and here. Berra might have a shot as an undiscovered talent. Ramo tried the NHL and was awful, and now is on an even worse team (on paper). There is always a longshot chance of picking up a Faskth (spelling?) type, but it's rare. Little risk with either acquisition, but don't be shocked if MacD is by far our best goalie and Ramo sails into the sunset yet again (albeit with a ridiculous chunk of cash).

He's on a "crap" team with bad D now too. Especially the bad D part.

    Goaltending

I do worry that Feaster is more interested in making his trades look good than doing what's best for the team. I'll be pretty surprised if Berra turns out to even be a backup. But hey, isn't he touted as another "best player outside the NHL?" Trust me on this, I'm a big fan of Swiss hockey and follow it closely. Conz is a better goalie than Berra, and I think Conz is a marginal NHL backup at best. Berra isn't even close to the best Swiss league goalie (he had a pretty good season last year, but less so this year), let alone a best outside of the NHL type prospect. Ramo is a better prospect and I think Ramo's value is near a conditional 7th rounder at best.

    Goaltending

I don't think it shows concern about getting a deal done. I think it shows concern that Ramo was a terrible goalie in his first NHL stint and while he is the "best goalie outside of the NHL," so is Berra apparently (just like Cervenka is the best forward outside of the NHL). Ramo is highly risky with low potential to pan out into a starter. Feaster would be an idiot to put all of his eggs in one basket. Especially the Ramo basket.

Conacher and a 4th exceeds anything we have IMO. Unless you wanted to move Baertschi.

How can we not be in on Bishop? We have no NHL goalies signed next year with Kipper gone... AT ALL.

    Goaltending

Running Berra and Ramo as a tandem next year would be the most insanely risky gamble ever for goaltending. Two unproven (Ramo is NOT unproven I guess, he's a proven failure that's attempting redemption) European goalies. Yeeaahhhh... I'd rather have one of them and MacD. MacD has been functional.. Extend him, bring in one of the Euros and let Taylor, Brust and Broissoit hang out in Abbotsford.
