Ortio was solid tonight. I'm happy for the guy, he's got some skills.

Berra has been mighty fine these last few games. Might even get an Olympic start to give Hiller a break. Though the back to back for Switzerland is Sweden/Czech so maybe not...

    Goaltending

^ Why? He'll be back down for the Olympic break. Ortio is just getting a taste of the NHL, what it's like to practice in the big time, watch how it all works on the bench. Even if he doesn't play, I think this is a good learning opportunity. It's not like he's sitting there getting fat. He gets most of the practice time and what not as backup. He's playing lots, just not in games, which is fine at this point in his development.

I wasn't suggesting he is going to acquire one today. It's a long-term thing. Maybe Ortio is the answer, but who cares, Ramo and Berra are not. If Ortio pans out, then you can trade Ortio or the new guy (whoever that may be). Burke builds from the net out and there is a very weak foundation at the net right now. We do not currently have an NHL quality goalie on the roster. If you want longshots, retreads and young guys running the show, you can see the results of that up north. You can have young guys in the works, and that's great, but you need someone established to challenge for that role every night. Someone that can play NHL hockey. Doesn't have to be Lundqvist good. But it has to be a decent goalie.

I think there is little doubt at this point that Burke will be looking to acquire some goaltending talent.

    Goaltending

Yeah, Gilles was pretty medicore. Certainly not a top talent compared to his peers at the WJC.

    Goaltending

I think the fact he is left off the team, especially behind some of those guys, is telling that Burke's assessment is more widely shared than dismissed. Good on Berra.

Need to keep in mind Berra is fresh to the NHL game, whereas Ramo is considerably more seasoned with 63 NHL games. Let's see where Berra is at by the end of the year an compare. It takes time to adapt. At this point, I don't see a large gap between the two in terms of ability or results. Neither has been at the quality of a bona fide NHL starter.

Ramo played well against the Kings. I felt the one goal should have been stopped, but it is what it is. A pretty solid performance. He's earned the next start if this is a meritocracy.

    Goaltending

One thing to consider in the comparison is Ramo had Giordano around for 25 minutes a night when he was playing whereas Berra has been stuck with a much weaker d-group.

Well with back-to-back with Ducks and Kings this weekend, I'm thinking you'll get to see Ramo flail about a bit this week.

    Goaltending

Let's see: Ramo has been awful, Berra has not. They've started an equal number of games. The only thing I think you can criticize is why it took so long to get Berra up. Berra gives the team the best chance to win every night. Both of his wins were steals where he was the difference maker. He stopped 43 shots last night. Ramo doesn't inspire that kind of confidence and has yet to prove he can steal one.

    Goaltending

Yup. Clear. Like by miles. And it's not just Berra, but how the team plays in front of him. If we had Gio back in the lineup like Ramo had the advantage of, the stats wouldn't even be in the same ballpark. A continuation of shuting out the Americans (30 saves) in the semi-finals of the WHC? And who posted by far the best Sv% and GAA of the 2013 WHC? A guy named Reto Berra (that's ahead of Mike Smith, Enroth, Pavaelc, Dubnyk, Gibson, Markstrom, etc., etc.) And a guy at 24 who posted the 4th best Sv% on a defensively weak NL-A team? Yeah, the stats from his early twenties aren't great, but he has proven he can play with the big boys on a few occassions. And the trend is positive. Which is encouraging.

Berra in two games has showed much more ability and poise than Ramo in 6. Until that changes, keep rolling with him.

    Goaltending

Hey, we have a goalie over .900Sv%! Greatest day of the year.

    Goaltending

Ramo has had a chance, he's proven to be inconsistent. Berra, we will see. It's game 1 and looking very good. Let's see if he can do it for a stretch of 5 or so.
  17. geos

    Goaltending

Excellent. Moving forward now. Let's see what Berra has and if he doesn't have anything and we haven't butchered the season running with this trio of insufficiency, then we can finally go acquire a goalie and get rocking.

    Goaltending

I didn't think you were allowed modifications to the standard player agreement?

    Goaltending

EDIT: One reason we may not have seen Berra called up yet is that I believe swapping out Ramo for Berra puts us below the cap floor.

    Goaltending

Not really. Including the Leaf's game his EVSv% is .911. Excluding that game he's 0.912. That's still not a great even strength Sv%. 46th in the league (including some backups, mind you). It still comes down to soft goals. Stop those one or two soft goals per game and we're a 4 or 5 points higher in the standings. That's the difference between a plug and an NHL starter. Quick or Niemi may allow a soft one every 10 games. Not every single night. You can't win like that. The stats don't tell the full story of how Ramo is costing us points, but the stats certainly support it. And no, I'm not arguing JMac is any better really. There is a reason why he too is not an NHL starter.

    Goaltending

I'm willing to give some benefit to goalies for these stats. Maybe you're 15th and should be 10th with better defense. Who knows? There isn't any precision in such stats really in ranking goalies. But when you're in the bottom, you're in the bottom, regardless. Jon Quick wouldn't be 0.888% on any NHL team. When your GAA AND Sv% are both in the dumps, you're a bad goalie. Ramo has allowed at least 1 if not 2 soft goals per game that an NHL starter wouldn't allow. Guess what, that's 6GA. If he stops 6 GA more, his stats look like... guess what... an NHL starter. The stats here do paint the picture. He's one soft goal per game away from being a decent goalie. Unfortunately he shows no evidence of being able to stop that problem.

    Goaltending

This is nonsense. We are top half in SA/G in the league and second last in GAA. This is a goaltending problem first. Yes, we can improve our SA, but when your goalie is sub .900, it's not going to help much. He faced half as many shots as Bernier last night. There is no excuse.

    Goaltending

The deal we should have made was for Bernier. I called for it last year and got heckled out of here because we had elite Ramo coming and Kipper was a sure fire starter this season. That was a fantastic value trade for the Leafs. We missed a huge opportunity to address our goaltending needs for a decade, for only a second round pick plus some garbage. I would be more interested in Gibson than Scrivens. We need a goalie that can be a star. Not a stop gap (Scrivens). That said, Gibson will cost us a first round pick. That's what happens when you don't take an opportunity to address a need.

The expectation must always be to make the playoffs. As soon as you're ok with losing a bit here and there, you start bulding the mentality of the Oiler's up north. Something that may prove to be impossible to fix. When the kids go out there and win games through their effort, only to see a loss on the scoresheet because we have no goaltending, it's disheartening. Worse, it tells the kids that the organization is prioritizing picking higher over WINNING. Last night should have been a win. Baertschi deserved a win. Monahan deserved a win. To have Ramo give it away because the team refuses to address the glaring need, it's a shame. It must always be about WINNING. These kids deserve a solid goalie to win games. We're top 10 in the league in scoring. They're pushing and showing they can be winners. Let's see the organization step up and give these kids the support they deserve.

It's not one stinker. He lets in a one or two softies every game (except for one game where he was excellent throughout). That's why he's not an NHL goalie. Lots of goalies can make some big saves and look good, the guys that don't allow soft goals are the ones that start games. Ramo is not a starter. Between preseason and his 6 starts that should be quite obvious. I'm ok giving him a couple more games to prove he can be solid for a full 60 minutes, but each time we do, we're jeopardizing any playoff shot. So far, it is on Ramo and JMac. We're scoring plenty of goals to be a top half team in the NHL. Plenty. We've got 4 or 5 points due to goaltending this year. That's the difference between where we are at and a divisional playoff spot. It is goaltending. Yes, our defense could be better too and that could make up for some of the shortfall. But you have ZERO hope of a playoff spot with a goalie posting a 0.888 Sv%. That's not good enough. It really isn't. The guys on Fan960 were discussing that this morning on the way to work and they were on the same page as me really there, so it's not just me seeing that he's not a very good goalie.
