  1. It would be kind of ironic if Nenshi wins by 19289 votes...
  2. I know, eh? They totally underestimated their own fanbase and that includes their spokesman E. Francis. Though he was kind of backtracking already the next day. I too have talked to several people at work, among friends and no one is siding with CSEC. Even many Nenshi haters have said they agree with the Mayor and a couple haters actually are considering voting for him and these people used to severly hate the Mayor. They said that they feel Nenshi is the only one who can properly look after the City's interests in this matter. We want a new arena but with a reasonable deal.
  3. Could you show me where it says that the City of Calgary will own the new arena? I haven't seen it anywhere.
  4. But that's just the thing. In the CSEC proposal (only based what's in the media right now) they would just want the City of Calgary to pay 1/3 of the cost of the arena, BUT city would not own the arena, partly or otherwise. It would be owned by the CSEC and all revenue would go only to the CSEC. Plus it was reported the CSEC would like to be exempt of paying property taxes to the city. So in short, they just want public funds with no direct financial returns to the city + more.
  5. One might add the Seattle arena will be build entirely without the use of direct public funding. Even the old proposal had Seattle and King County shelling $200M towards the arena, but this would of been paid back in rent and tax revenue. What I understand the CSEC wants the City of Calgary to pay 1/3 of the cost of the new arena, period! No revenue sharing, no rent and no paying back the public funds. We shall see soon as the proposals will be published.
  6. Wow! What a misquotation! "I am just saying no public funds to help out a private business in this magnitude at this time." You just took the first part of my sentence and ran with it. You totally misunderstood my point and put words into my mouth. Come on! You did not highlight the most important part of my sentence: in this magnitude at this time. So lets put those two parts together: "I am just saying no public funds to help out a private business in this magnitude at this time." Maybe you now understand that I never said: No public funds to help out a private business! or To say zero public money should be given to a business that stimulates the economy on a regular basis would be rather narrow minded. I want the new arena! But I want it to be a fair deal because at this economic downturn, a massive amount of public funds spent in a hasty deal, can seriously damage our city and it's economy. Please in the future read with an open mind before attacking someone with a misquote!
  7. I've heard about it but never watched the movie or read the book. Sounds a lot like the Big Short. That was a depressing movie! Maybe next time when I'm feeling too happy I'll have a look ?
  8. I am just saying no public funds to help out a private business in this magnitude at this time. But I'm not against a new arena. They need to negotiate a fair deal for both sides. I'm glad the proposals are going to be published so we can evaluate and make up our minds what's fair and what's not. The fact still remains if we use a huge chunk of puplic funds now to a new arena there's less public funds to be used elsewhere for several years whether the funds are going to be paid back or not. I don't want to see other important public projects to be crippled by this arena deal. And it's not really fair to say that you are just discussing and I have an anti agenda. Not really a valid argument since I am just presenting a different view on the same matter we are discussing about.
  9. No I certainly didn't. The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is collecting property taxes from the downtown area (not just from "nothing was there" neighbourhood) and using most of them towards funding for schools in Detroit. This property tax is public funding and now a huge chunk of it is going towards funding the new arena and therefor less amount of public funds are going towards schools. There's a lot of good info on it in DDA's and the Detroit City Council's websites. The idea here is that public funds are for the public. A brand new arena will never pay for itself. The CSEC needs to share revenue with the City of Calgary, because it is a very affordable loan when public funds are used and it needs to be paid back rather sooner than later. The ripple effect has been researched numerous times and it never comes even close to boost the public portion of the economy than what was proposed. One could ask: "Where is the capitalism when it comes to privately owned professional sports teams?"
  10. The arena was supposed to cost $444M out of that public money to be used was going to be $283M. Now the actual cost was $862M and then this: "The Downtown Development Authority, the public entity that owns the arena, is expected to collect $726 million in school property tax revenue through 2051 as part of its tax increment financing. The money will be used to pay off $363 million in bonds for public investments in the arena and the surrounding development district." Link That is a horrible prospect! For the next 33 years $726M will be used towards the arena that was supposed to be used solely for schools!
  11. I wholeheartedly agree! Public funds are to be used for the benefit of the public like schools, roads, hospitals etc. NOT to help billionaires to create more revenue. I mean if the Amazon decides to bring their new facility to Calgary I can guarantee that City of Calgary will not partially fund to build their facility! There might be kickbacks but no direct funding. I'm sure those same kickbacks were offered to CSEC also! I would LOVE to see these proposals and to see for real how the CSEC cannot afford to build the arena without public funding. Good video about the subject: Last week Tonight with John Oliver - Stadiums
  12. http://www.hpk.fi/eetu-tuulola-siirtyy-whlaan-kaudeksi-2016-2017/ I'm using my Finnish language skills instead of that awful Google Translate... EETU TUULOLA MOVES TO WHL FOR THE SEASON 2016-2017 HPK forward Eetu Tuulola uses the clause in his contract and opts to move to Canadian Junior League WHL for the season 2016-2017. Tuulola was drafted at #156 earlier this summer by Calgary Flames. Tuulola is still under contract with HPK for the season 2017-2018. The head coach of HPK Antti Pennanen would of liked to keep Tuulola with the team. "Liiga is a good place to be for developing young players, not the least they play with men, but there's also a lot of time allocated for practice. We would of liked to see Eetu battling on ice while wearing the HPK jersey. I also believe we could of helped Eetu with his development towards being a pro. We'll respect Eetu's decision and wish him nothing but the best for the next season." HPK Communications

I agree 100% Not to mention that Ortio was (and still is, I think) mentored by the "Finnish Goalie Whisperer" Urpo "Upi" Ylonen, who also mentored Kipper and Niittymaki among others... Ramo is not from "Upi's farm" and it shows in his quite poor rebound control...

Finland is no longer Kipper's home. He sold his house in Turku and only has a summer cottage in Finland. In the Finnish media he confirmed he's going to live in Calgary retired from hockey or not. Kipper our new assistant goalie coach/mentor?
