I would have been all over Raanta if he got to UFA but it's hard to say the Flames missed the boat. Raanta cost the Coyotes a top 10 pick an a decent top 6 center. Flames could not have matched that trade.
  2. Assistant coach for Stockton. Quite the resume for an assistant coach. Greyhounds have been a great program the last several years.
  3. There always should be. IMO anyone who puts failures on coaching, GM etc is making a cop out for the players. Whether your coach is Gulutzan, Peters, or frickin Mike Babcock the owness should always fall back on the players. I think we really need to move past this idea that coaches are these high and mighty people who can manipulate and "coach" their way to success. Pro sports are a players games and players win games, not coaches.
  4. Not always. My point is let's look at some variables becaue lots goes into it. When it comes to coaching you have a few guys at the top and the when you look at career wins it's a real mixed bag. Ron Wilson is at 10th, Paul Maurice 12th and Jacques Martin 17th. All "failes" in multiple situations. I think variables need to be considered. People disagree and that's fine.
  5. I understand I just don't agree. I'm agreeing to disagree and moving on.
  6. Ok so the answer is to continue looking for coaches until you get one of the best of all time. I understand.
  7. All you have to do is look at te Jack Adams to see it's not that small a sample size. Plenty of coaches win in the short time and then don't again. What is equally flawed is looking only at wins and not accounting for survivorship bias. Being an NHL coach is by default a small sample size so there is flaw in both reasonings so to present your way as Fact is interesting. It is not fact, it's an opinion. If "everyone who knew hockey" only looked at wins then coaches like Bobby Francis, Paul Maclean and Bill barber would have been given more chances.
  8. So Claude Julien is a great coach then? What's happened the last few years? Guy Boucher has been to the Eastern Conference finals twice and plummeted the next year. What does that say there are tons of variables that go into Wins. That being said I understand what your saying and probably shiuod have said there is no good metric to predict success of a coach.
  9. Done so and in fact I've read the entire report the city commissioned plus talked to many people about it that have more of a background in it then myself. My opinion is not based solely on the numbers, but the numbers not working is a large component.
  10. CalgaryNext did not offer very significant savings over separate facilities. In Kings own words, it was around 100million which is easily offset by the cleanup cost. But we've debated this enough and are not likely to agree. I'll never agree that 1 billion of public money on a project like CalgaryNext is a justifiable price tag or a smart investment. The Crowchild project was not, and never has been included as part of the CalgaryNext estimate.
  11. The price tag, specifically the amount of public money.
  12. I get that is a common idea, it's just not one that resonates with me. If the province or the Feds kick in money it's still the taxpayer and because i think all 3 level of government are not in very good financial shape it's just not how I want to see the money spent. Just transfers the debt IMO but that's a bias I have. I just don't like Calgarynext either so I side with the mayor on that one. I read that report and once I did and actually thought of the idea I think it's horrible. I guess if they want to go back to the drawing board with ideas so be it, but I happen to agree with Nenshi that Vic Park makes the most amount of sense for a new building.
  13. Maybe you can correct me, but my understand is that the Mayor sits on all committees by default. Their website seems to suggest that too, but i'm by no means an expert on civic politics. http://www.calgary.ca/citycouncil/pages/mayor/mayor.aspx?redirect=/mayor/pages/home.aspx To each their own, but I don't have a problem with what Nenshi said and I personally like that he keeps reminding us that a lot of work went into showing that West Village was not viable so why are we going to start from scratch and waste more money to get the same result? My fear in this new committee is that they just cater and give the Flames whatever they want, so if Nenshi stays involved and keeps that from happening I like that. But I do agree he needs to keep his ego out of it, I just don't agree that what he said yesterday was ego driven.
  14. I don't see anything wrong with what Nenshi said today

Relevant to the discussion a while back about late round goalies. Samuel Ersson is a name that isn't showing up on these lists and I wonder why. Limited tape i've found he looks really good and has been getting progressively better in the Swedish junior leagues and was just selected to summer camp for the World Junior club. He'd be someone I would be interested in too. https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/potential-late-round-gems---goaltenders/c-299119474
  16. At the end of the day, there really is no good metric to measure a coach. too many variables come into play that can't be accounted for and are out of the coaches responsibility.
  17. city is not off to a great start here, as apparently they leaked the letter... I do agree, so long as the city takes the deal to the public for consultation. I'm not for a deal that involves no public consultation but I do agree that while they are negotiating it makes sense to leave the public out. Public negotiations do not end well, but just don't let CESC try and cut a back room deal that is bad for the city.
  18. In Nashville, Trotz missed the playoffs as often as he made them
  19. I heard the same report but I understood it differently. His son has Down syndrome and the initial move was hard on them. I heard it reported thst Trotz would actually prefer to stay because moving his family was tough. Trotz had an extension thst would have paid him significantly less then he's worth for the next two years so I don't blame him for leaving. He's worth at least what guys like Julien and Mclellan get.
  20. His family was with him in DC. By most accounts this came down to money.
  21. That assumes Trotz would want to come here and the Flames would pay a coach a top 5 salary (which is Trotz's request). History says they would not. What if Treliving waiting and got neither of them? Personally, I don't think Trotz is the better coach. For me they are equal but also I don't think paying a coach that type of salary is worth it.
  22. Small clarity note, Loob has been hired to head up European Pro scouting with a focus on Sweden. I'm sure they consult with him on the amateur side, but European Free agent signings sounds like it will be his primary focus. Best of my knowledge the Flames have never had a Head of European Pro Scouting before and i'm not actually sure they've had a dedicated European Pro Scout. They do have I believe 2 amateur European Scouts in Ari Haanpan and Bobbie Hagelin that are their European Amateur Scouts full time.

Possible. But it's also tough to get guys to come over from the K if the plan is to play them in the A
