Can't go away from Smith this early. i see the trend too but st the end of the day I still think he's the best goalie you have and has the greatest chance of helping you when the game matter. Small sample size to abandon that plan or to suggest Rittich Is better. Need more games
  2. I don't think you switch a young player just finding his groove. I'm open to this if he can keep this up for 20 games but for now leave him where he is comfortable.
  3. Good problem to have but I think Bennett is now forcing Peters to find him more ice time. I hope they do because but imo Bennett needs to be in the top 6 with how he is playing.

I agree you go back to Smith. However if he isn't good again I think you re think the plan and start to split starts.
  5. Why waste money though? The demand didn't justify the maintenance so why just burn up money for no benefit?
  6. Ski jumping is probably the least popular of all the events. I still watch it on TV and when I do the stands are basically always empty. I would argue the opposite I think the cost would outweigh the benefit and I think hosting them in whistler is a wise idea. Almost all venues since 88 have been maintained and kept updated except the ski jump. There is a reason for that, the demand was never there so why go down that path again? Learn from your past.
  7. The only events being proposed to be held at whistler are ski jumping and by doing so the bid saves over 50 million. Everything else would be held either in Calgary, Canmore or Banff. Most of the facilities left over from 88 are actually in very good shape, oval, track Canmore etc. In fact the province is currently spending 7 million to upgrade the bobsleigh track and did so before the Olympics were a possibility.
  8. Yes the 800 million is only based on the initial cost proposal but like I mentioned the province specifically said they are not going to be on the hook for cost overruns. So yes there is no way that 800 million would be all the city would pay. I think the idea that the Olympics are guarantees losers or guaranteed failures is misplaced. When you tend to give them to 3rd world coutniers and countries rip with corruption yes they tend to be "losers". I would say that games in Calgary, Atlanta, salt lake, London and Vancouver were all pretty successful depending on how you define success. It can can be done but it requires the right people in charge. Not sure we have that personally.
  9. The Oilers missed an opportunity to clean house last summer. By saying they were comfortable with The Chia plan they made the hot seat for everyone that much warmer and imo have created an organization that's is too dysfunctional to win. Nightmare, and a nightmare that is basically 100% self inflicted. Oilers fans should be big fans of Jon Gruden because outside of the raiders I'm not sure there's is a worse run pro sports franchise then the Oilers.
  10. No comment from the Feds yet but I read that the max they will offer is 1.5 billion. Apparently they have a rule that says they won't fund more than 50%. Leaves the city on the hook for 800 million and the cost overruns, which is probably the bigger issue imo. Not good news for the pro Olympic movement.

While I do agree that "hot garbage" is a little extreme because the Flames were not ready to go last night, Smith was not good enough. The Flames deserve to be down but IMO it was Smith's poor play that put it basically out of reach. Most goalies probably hold that game to 3-1 worst case 4-1 because even his stupid puck handling cost the Flames a goal. Being down 3-1 or 4-1 is a different story. He needs to be better. Period, end of story.
  12. I am always amazed at how many people get this wrong.

I don't get the same sense. He's vocal but vocal does not equal "me first". I would argue the opposite, he's been pretty refreshing in critiquing himself about poor games.

Agreed, which is why i'm not a fan of the Seattle expansion plan. Get the $ involved and sure Vegas was a terrific story last year but I think we are going to see issues pop in for the next several season as I just don't think the league can support the 2 new teams. At this point I don't even think i'd treat Smith as the starter. Hopefully Rittich plays well on Saturday and if he does i'd ride the hot hand. No reason why Smith should be given the net.

Problem with this is this is exactly how goalie like Smith gets run out. No reason why you can't manage starts now instead of always pushing it back to the end of the year. Flames need Smith at his best in March/April, not October.

Not worth getting upset about, but I think its disappointing Smith is starting tonight. This is the same trap this organization seems to fall into all the time it's always "we'll start him next game" and then next game never comes and Smith plays 15-20 games in a row. So feels like an overreaction but i'm just not sure I can give them the benefit of the doubt.

I think shot quantity is a really poor indicator of defensive play. Last night's Preds were a lot like the Flames of last year. Lots of possession lots of quantity but they really didn't turn that into much quality. Most of the high danger stuff was them crashing the net and trying to jam pucks home, so while that can be dangerous i'm not sure it's another indicator of poor defensive play. I actually thought the Flames defended well. They didn't get puck out or transition out very well so If you link that to one in the same that's a reasonable conclusion. I thought their lack of ability to get the puck up the ice led to Nashville getting more zone time but score effects are part of this too.
  18. he isn't. He's still actually effective without McDavid he's just that much better with him. Could also look at Ehlers, Schiefele, Monahan etc. What I meant is that some players, especially young ones, need help to get going. Doesn't mean they are not good, means they are learning.
  19. Problem that I have with this, is your picking rare players. I see it as a common knock against Bennett that people argue that he should have been able to produce no matter who he played with. however, if you look at young players coming into the league most of them get help and most get coddled. Guys like Petterson, McDavid etc are the exception, they are not the norm. Heck even Draistl didn't do crap until McDavid came along.
  20. We also tend to forget that when you compare their rookie season, Bennett had 4 less goals and 2 more points then Monahan.
  21. Wasn't a problem his rookie year. Having to carry 2 non nhler as a rookie center really didn't help either. Agree to disagree. I also don't mean to suggest Bennett should shoulder no blame and it's all on the Flames, that's not fair either. But I point heavily to the Flames here.

Not a strong one no. If it were me id go Rittich in Nashville. Played well there before and then it also takes away the fear that if you target St. Louis and lost against Nashville you may flip flop to avoid going 0-2. Take the sure thing like conundrumed said.

I just like they want to get both guys in quick. None of this letting the backup sit for 2 weeks before he plays
  24. Fundamentally I just don't agree. I will always be ofnthe opinion that the flames did a horrible job with Bennett. But it's the past and can't change it so I'm trying to hide my frustration over it. It's just hard when o thought Peters would approach with a clean slate and he doesn't appear to.
