  1. Have to see how things shake out. Based on who was available to draft I would have viewed Gio as a middle of the pack expansion asset. While he is probably top 3-4 in notoriety I think it’s debatable how valuable a 38 year old player on a 1 year deal is to an expansion franchise.
  2. they'll get revealed tomorrow once the roster freeze is lifted.
  3. i think a few reasons. what is that was the only player they actually wanted from that club. Those handshake deals can go away quickly with 1 phone call on the open market. Is the additional player worth the risk of losing exclusivity? Is that really above board? While legal yes, does that harm his ability to do a deal with that team in the future if he isn’t forthcoming?
  4. Be interning to see tomorrow what type of deals Seattle made, but first glance it looks like they left a lot on the table. That or the rest of the GMs played hardball and won.
  5. I’m not in the room so not a great opinion but as an outsider looking in, I wouldn’t name one. Let that role be earned or learned. im not putting the C on a guy like lucic. Nothing against him but I wouldn’t want my captain being one of the most over paid players in the league who you can’t wait to have his deal end.
  6. i think that’s clearly Yanni Gourde at least imo.
  7. Appears to be official. End of an era
  8. Losing Larson in the expansion draft too. D gets worse with the addition of Keith, then loses Larson and now they are going to put Smith behind that for more than 1 year? Yikes.
  9. Savard was 2.5 mill cheaper than Gio and as a pending UFA didn’t create an expansion draft issue nor an issue with a team needing to account for Gio next year too,not to mention Savard has no clauses. Not comparable and not nearly as easy to broker a trade I think if the Flames wanted to move Gio and actually get decent assets it would have needed to be last off season and even then with the reduction in the cap it wouldn’t have been easy
  10. In the cap system you no longer lose a player for nothing, you gain their cap space and with a player like Gio that is not insignificant. would your prefer assets and the cap space sure, but it’s not that simple. Need to remember that even if the flames wanted to deal Gio at the trade deadline there was I believe less than half the league in a position to take his cap hit. Easy to say the flames should eat some money but what’s the value there? On top of needing the cap space, Gio had a partial NTc and your still have the issue of an acquiring team needed to be able to protect Gio in order to extract a worthwhile assets. It’s hardly a simple solution. Flames stand to pick up 7 mill in cap space and I’m not sure the value they would have received at the TDL would detract from that. Sure it sucks it’s ending this way, at least appears to be, but that’s the nature of the expansion draft.

I would be surprised to see Oleksiak get less than what Tanev got. I think the Tanev deal is likely your starting point for him and could easily see him getting north of that once the bidding gets going. I think He’s going to be a pricy add
  12. 6th rounder. I think your looking at a 2nd plus another asset. He should be worth more than Leddy, especially if Seattle’s eats any money
  13. Given that both Leddy and Keith generated trade value I have a hard time seeing the Kraken passing on Gio. I think they take him and flip him for assets elsewhere. I like Phillips but taking him over the chance to land a couple of draft picks? That would make no sense to me. of course this assumes the flames don’t make a trade to keep him which is still possible
  14. Price waived his NMC only for expansion, it’s back in place once they select him. Would need his consent to be moved anywhere.
  15. I agree. I wouldn’t argue that the flames are on the right track but I think, baring a crazy offseason, they’ll be a playoff team. I don’t think they are bad as some fans think and in a bad division I see them being in the top 3. Honestly wouldn’t be shocked at all to see them finish above the Oilers.
  16. Fleury didn’t come with the horrible contract Price does though. They’d owe him 11 mill right away in a bonus and that deal is really hard to buy out. Fleury was a slam dunk, I wouldn’t be interested in price if I were Seattle.

    UFA 2021

Agreed. While I’m not a huge fan of going after Hyman this isn’t Brouwer or Neal. The problem with both of those guys was they were one trick ponies. Outside of scoring, which Brouwer didn’t do consistently and Neal was declining at 5on 5, they brought very little on the ice. Hyman is different. He’s been very consistent 5 on 5, he’s excellent away from the puck, consistently drives offense, top end PKer, and a very good fore checker. He is basically a RS/bigger version of Mangiapane and He is far from the one trick ponies that Neal and Brouwer were. the main risks with Hyman are age and finishing ability I think the rumors going around are just fluff and he won’t get those numbers but if you can keep it to 4-5 years and 5.5 or less I don’t think many would be upset with him as a Flames at those numbers. Anything north gets very risky and likely is a buyout waiting to happen.
  18. this is a surprise to me. Good asset for Seattle to have. don’t really understand this for Columbus.
  19. I think we clearly differ on Ritchie. Rather than go back and forth here is a visual of why I don’t like him. There’s nothing “special” about his game. in theory I prefer specialized skill sets but my number one thing with my bottom 6, and I wouldn’t compromise it especially for size, is they can’t get run over 5 on 5. I think hits, physical play and the odd fight are useless and don’t help if the line is constantly chasing the game and giving up chances. but what is getting lost here is that they had to do this so signing him is really not a question. The question only enters if they plan on actually using him in a regular role and that remains to be seen. They still can, and imo should be, looking to upgrade the spot.
  20. and to be fair it shouldn’t be Leivo vs Ritchie because Leivo likely wasn’t an option. I’m just saying that’s the move I would have preferred but I also acknowledge it likely wasn’t an option. So this isn’t really arguing that the flames should have signed Leivo. I will only have a problem with this if Ritchie plays a regular role. I have no problem with players providing energy or physicality, you need that. Where I am coming from is if they are bad players outside of that they are not helping your team and Richie is not a good player.they should want that skill set but in a player who is actually a help so I hope the plan is to find that type of player and not play Ritchie.
  21. What interesting is I think the opposite is true, and that is what the data would support to. Ritchie is tough yes but outside of that he literally brings nothing. He’s a black hole offensively, terrible defensively, he literally brings no value other than a couple of big hits and the odd fight. Now I acknowledge that is more important to some others than me and that’s fine but yes I would have brought back Leivo. Leivo was finding his scoring touch while still being pretty good away from the puck. like I said I get why they did this as Sutter would never play Leivo anyway but I just don’t agree with it. Having toughness and size in your bottom 6 is a good thing but I also believe that player should still bring other positives too. Ritchie doesn’t.

    UFA 2021

I’ve said this before but I could see the flames doing a full court press of Hyman. He checks literally every box of what they need and are looking for in a player. It won’t be a good deal, no high profile UFa signings are, but I could see them doing it. I don’t think he’s going to get anywhere near the term that’s being thrown out there thought. That feels like an agent leaking that.
  23. Expected and makes them good to go for the expansion draft but I don’t like it. Not a good player and not someone worthy of a regular roster spot and at we know the coach will give him one. They can still bury him in the A so if the plan is just to use this for expansion fodder and go a different direction then I’d be happy. its depth so it’s not worthy getting worked up about either way, just not a positive direction imo.
  24. And no salary retained. icing on the cake…
