lunatik-1
there is a whole story about it... i will give the readers digest version... a group of Omaha business men who organized the Nebraska state fair went to Mardi Gras... when they came back they were talking about how the world was going backwards and they started an organization to help the community go in the right direction... they called themselves the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben... because as i previously stated the world is going backwards
donbailey1957
Phrase is years and years old, the race track has always been called Aks-Sar-Ben and there are a number of other references to Nebraska being spelt backwords. Why I do not know but it has been around for 50 years or more.
bandwagon
This pretty much verifies what Lunatik said: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_of_Ak-Sar-Ben The organization was formed in 1895 in an attempt to keep the Nebraska State Fair in Omaha after receiving an ultimatum to provide entertainment "other than saloons, gambling houses and honky tonks." In 2005, the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights of the American Hockey League were named after the Knights, who have a minority ownership stake in the team.
