  1. 8 goals on 60 shots vs. 4 goals on 39 shots, and he has earned it?  Against the Nucks he was 5 goals on 28 shots, all even strength.  Can't see it.  Ramo was 4 goals on 39 shots, 2 of which were PP goals.  He kept us in it to the SO, but just wasn't prepared for the likes of Grabo and Ovi.

I think MacDonald has looked more solid than Ramo.  Does that mean he earned the next start?  Dunno.  But in the interest of moving the team forward I think it would make a LOT more sense to play Ramo.  But as someone else suggested the Flames might just be sheltering Ramo from playing against Montreal (his old team).  That said, barring MacDonald standing on his head, the Flames better be starting Ramo in the game after.  MacDonald is not the goalie of the future, and if he is the goalie of the present we are in trouble.  The devil you don't know is the better option when the one you know has nasty horns and breathes olive smelling fire.

with all due respect, those are very outdated statistical concepts you're using.   I also earn a living working with performance related data.

Maybe more of an offline conversation.

But by your logic, the only thing we learned from our two more recent floods:   2005 and 2013, is that they were freak events that will likely not happen again for another 150 years.

I do want Ramo to be good.   But I want all our goaltenders to be good.

Remember when you said that the best goaltender will get the playing time, "simple"?

That's Jmac right now and we all know it.

I won't even get into the irrelevant comparison of natural disasters versus goal tending performances in two NHL games (of which only one was good).  But as for the bold, no we don't.

  3. Last time I checked Danny Taylor isn't playing in the NHL or in North America.  It wasn't just the Flames that didn't want him.  I will never understand how you can get attached to underdogs like Taylor and Irving yet be so irrationally against players like Ramo.

Actually I know the answer.  A large part of my job is working with performance related data.  I also have some formal education in statistics and metrics.  You misuse data in incredibly misleading ways.  Like trying to use a 2-game sample size to tout Taylor.  Or making incredible inferences about Ortio's, Berra's, and Ramo's performances based on unsupported analysis.

Unless you are a professional scout that evaluates goalies and you have a lot of game evidence than you don't know anything more than the rest of us.  Which was that Ramo performed okay in his second NHL debut.  Anyone without that training and evidence that is taking anything more then a wait and see approach to the Calgary goal tending situation doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Personally I am pessimistic that Ramo, Berra, or MacDonald turns into an NHL starter.  For the simple fact that more goalies fail the transition than succeed.  But I acknowledge that the odds aren't that stacked against them and given the opportunity any of them (Ramo and Berra in particular) could end up as starting goalies in the NHL.

I also acknowledge that it would have been completely irresponsible for the Flames to rely on a player like Taylor.  The Flames are doing the right thing.  They are rolling the dice on a couple of imports and hoping they come up 7s. They aren't rushing prospects.  They aren't spending big assets to acquire goalies in trades.  They aren't relying on aging goalies with no future.  And they aren't putting the franchise on the shoulders of AHL players like Taylor that can't even get an invite to an NHL training camp.

My advise is to relax, watch the games, and stop trying to act like you know better than every other NHL team based on the odd numbers you put together in a spreadsheet.  Try cheering for the players and stop looking for told you so images so you can plaster them on the forum the first chance one of our players looks like they might falter.

You don't have any idea how good Ramo will or won't be.  So why not just cheer for him to be good?

  4. I doubt ownership is going to plunk their $2.7M prize Ramo in the AHL. The guy getting paid will play. Ramo will start.

I think ownership has shown time and time again that salary doesn't dictate play.  That said I agree that Ramo will play.  The Flames think he is a starter and will give him the starts to prove that one way or the other.

  5. Normally I am not a big fan of the 'throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and hope something sticks' strategy.  But goalies are unpredictable enough that it makes sense to add a few bullets to the gun.

The Flames don't have a good option for an NHL starting goalie.  Relying on Ramo is too many eggs in too small of a basket.  Berra gives them another option and there isn't anything wrong with that.

It isn't like we gave up the farm for him.  He was an add on that came with a 1st round pick and Cundari.

Taylor wasn't an option for the NHL.  It wasn't just Calgary that didn't want him. He is signed in the KHL now.

I would have prefer a mid 20's proven NHL starter with elite upside.  But that isn't in the card.  So muck on the wall it is.

  6. And that's all I'm saying. Posting thought on how someone plays in a game doesn't mean in saying that's who he is. I just think he is more of a project and probably needs sone seasoning in the A rather tan someone who is going to step in right away and play.

I understand that.  It will be interesting to see how he develops.  Some goalies pick it up right away.  Some take time.

If I had to guess right now I would say it is MacDonald/Ramo in the NHL, Berra/Ortio in the AHL, and Brossoit in the ECHL.  That said I wouldn't be surprised to see Berra make the NHL or Brossoit make the AHL.

  7. I felt he got very lucky yesterday. There were 3 or 4 times he got out of place on a rebound and the player just missed the net. Im not saying he has Ben awful I just think he is more of a project at this point than someone ready to play in the NHL. I also didn't think the Granlund goal was particularity great.

That was his first scrimmage on NA ice though.  No surprise he is struggling with his angles.  The rest of his game looked decent.  Jury is still out IMO.

  8. I also don't think it's an awful thing for Brossoit to play in the ECHL either.

Personally I didn't walk away from camp that happy with Berra. I was expecting a more technically and fundamentally sound goalie and what I found was someone who I thought pulled himself ou of position making saves which made recovery difficult. He also let in two pretty weak goals in my opinion yesterday. Ortio had a pretty solid camp IMO but I think it comes down to training camp and wether or not Ortio has any interest in playing in the A. If he doesn't and would prefer to play pro in Finland it makes for an easier decision.

I actually have liked what I have seen with Berra.  He let in a bad one in the Scrimmage where he failed to hug the post.  But in general he has been pretty solid.

Sweet vindication.   Being wrong and having one of these goalies stand out would be better, though.

A tad bit premature?  Are you just trolling now?

  9. Its just a bitter pill to swallow to think that its all about the money.  I would think he would want to prove himself first before demanding high dollars when you don't really knowing what you're getting.  If he has a stellar year or two than he's in a position to hold the hammer, right now he's an unknown commodity in my opinion.

He might.  Which is why I don't think it is impossible he will sign for a lower figure.  I think it is a big assumption that he won't play in the NHL for less money then he is making in the KHL.  For all we know he is willing to take a large pay cut to play here.

  10. Ramo will be paid more then 2mil. Id be surprised if its just 3mil. The guy is making good coin in the KHL and Feaster will have to pay him to get him over here.

Feaster can't afford not to sign him unfortunately.  Another case of overselling (and possibly overpaying).  He will be eating a lot of crow if he doesn't bring him over.  So Ramo has some leverage.  He also isn't on an ELC so no restrictions apply.

I still don't think it is impossible we can ink him to a 1 or 2 year deal at 2.5 million per.  That said, it won't shock me if it is 3M or so.

  11. http://www.truehockey.com/articles/Lehtera-Chooses-KHL-Over-NHL-Will-Stay-in-RussiaPlus-Calgary-Signs-Goalie

Not sure how legit of a source this is, but seeing as nothing can be official until July 5th anyways....I'll take it.

Seems the Flames brass have agreed to terms with Ramo on a multi-year deal.  No details on the amount or duration.  Let the fight for the crease commence:  MacDonald, Berra, Ramo, Kipper(likely retiring, but still undecided).

Strickland is pretty reliable.  Plus a lot of other people are reporting on this as well (mostly due to Strickland breaking it, but still).  Sounds like a done deal to me.

  12. If you look at what the Rangers did with Zuccarello they were able to bring him over with permission from his KHL team. But you better believe Avangard Omsk will offer everything and the kitchen sink to keep Ramo around.

It's definitely troubling news hearing that Feaster was going for ANOTHER goalie in Bishop. Is that a sign of trouble in the Ramo dealings? Who knows, but it's a topic of conversation thats forsure.

Feaster trying to sign Bishop is a sign that Kipper was potentially going to be traded and will potentially retire at the end of the season.  It isn't a sign that Ramo may not sign.

I am not sure why that is troubling.  Prospects are about the percentages.  You are excited about all of them, but realistically only a few work out.  The more you have the more you have working out.  Ramo isn't exactly a prospect, but (like Cervenka was) he might as well be. If Feaster was going into next season with a plan to run Ramo and Bera as our goalies without having a plan B then I would be concerned.  If we end up with 3 high caliber NHL goalies is that really a bad thing?

Ramo may not sign.  But so far all signs were that he wants to be an NHL goalie and he would have been this season if he could have gotten out of his KHL contract.

Even if he does sign I fully expect the Flames to be in on Bernier this summer.  And any other young potential starter that is available.

  13. you know the imp in me wonders if Louongo ends up here.

We have the room and have a starter need .....  *shrug*

I can't imagine it would actually happen but  .....  *EVIL GRIN*

    :) Doubt it.

But he has been pulled off the ice.  Looks like he is being traded somewhere.  Probably Toronto.

EDIT: Looks like he was messing around.  He remains a Canuck.
