I agree with all of this cept I'd like to hold onto Mangiapane.. There are a few minor leaguers I'd swap ahead of him.. Lazar.. And Ruzicka.. Lazar I think will continue to be a bust here and Yea Ruzicka had a decent year after he was traded but the personality issues that comes packaged with him might be too much to ever make the big step on a permanent basis

I would only use Mangiapane for a deal such as a part for Kapanen.

JTECH posted this in Realistic Trades etc etc.

Just my opinion, in case anyone agrees.

A lot of these threads are saying the same thing and are simply becoming massive pages long.

Seems like 8 different, yet the same, subject matters are in half of the threads.

Is it time for a Flames forum board clean up? Just wondering everyone's opinion.

Out with the old, in with the new?

    I started a new thread

I agree, I think we can afford to trade Brodie and Stone for picks along with one of Neal and Frolik, and fill in the gaps either internally (ie. Valimaki) or with UFA.  Plenty of quality UFAs to choose from this year, so hopefully prices won't be too crazy.

If possible I would move both Neal and Frolik, why not if there are deals to be had ? If we can redeploy those funds into younger, faster talent I would do it now.

We’ve signed a rash of prospects of late, a lot of 4th rounders. I good sign I would think, Ruzicka could be one to keep an eye on in the coming years. It’s definitely time to restock though, not a lot of picks again this year

At first glance we have a lot of needs in the minors coming into next season. This is why if I were BT I wouldn't be so concerned about trading the players no longer desired for draft picks only. Depending on the changes being contemplated for the 2019-20 team I would strongly consider some available UFAs to restructure some of our lines and pairings. As an example if we could get Mrazek G, Dzingel LW, Connelly RW and Duchene C from UFA BT could use Brodie, Stone, Frolik, Neal, Jankowski, Mangiapane and Czarnick to garner as many picks as possible for this draft, maybe even some for the next year draft.

Amazing that our worrygoing into the playoffs was goaltending.

I guess that as this thread fell so far down that everyone is content with Smitty's performances?

I just hope he isn't tired out with all the work we have given him.

I think the coaching staff did a great job scheduling and nurturing Smith back to top performance level. Win or lose with him now is how I see it.

It will be the other parts of our game that must determine where we go from here.

Rittich started game 1, gave up 2 early in his first start of the season.  He settled in and the Flames came back and won in OT 3-2.

Smith went game 2 and put us down 4-1 going to the third, some really ugly goals allowed IIRC.  Team stormed back to win 6-5

Rittich went game 3, had a solid showing the team in front of him did not, lucky for us Varlamov was worse than Smith was in the second game.

Head to head the edge goes to Rittich, granted Smith had improved from his start in November, I still believe Rittich was more responsible for 2 wins were Smith was a benefactor from a dominant period.  I believe Smith will still be the guy in game 1.

I think the key to beating COL will be on Backlund and Frolik to shutdown McKinnon's line. I don't think we have a Goalie edge right now so error on the side of experience and start with Smith is my thinking.

I don't like the way Smith has been making his saves, but he has been making them of late.

I think Rittich had the job, but he hasn't very good at since the All-Star break.

I honestly don't have much faith in either goalie at the moment. Just have to hope that one of them can get on a hot streak.

What have the games been like vs COL, who played against them the most and results ?
Given the last few games Peters could flip a coin.

I'd be shocked if the Canes don't re-sign him regardless, so it's likely a non-issue.

Nobody really wants to play in Carolina or Columbus do they ? Players that reach UFA are crazy not to hear out other teams and CALGARY represents a very good chance to win a SC over the next 3 seasons. I would have no problem signing Mrazek on a 3 year deal now knowing what we have in Rittich at this level.

If the Flames are gonna trust the playoffs to Smith, there’s a very good chance he’s back next season, barring an Elliott like collapse of course

Some how I don't think so.

I am totally stoked man. I was here for '89 and '04, and they were amazing times. This city is about to go bananas if they push through to the second round.

You must be really old. LOL

Not always. Sometimes I just think it through. I'm just painting a picture of Mrazek outside of numbers and highlight saves from this year.

The flip side is you get Philly Mrazek. What if that happens? Because it can.

Sure it can, anything can happen both ways however fighting trough some adversity can make some people better. Pro athletes like to be challenged or at least they should or they shouldn't be where they are. Two Czech goalies feeding of each other could be a good situation to have on the team, comradery and competition. Smith will be done and I don't see much else out there. Gilles hasn't exactly jumped out at the opportunity, Parsons isn't ready yet. I think we need Mrazek to a certain degree if BT can snag him on a good deal.

  12. 15 minutes ago, conundrumed said:

As a Detroit fan, Mrazek scares me. When he came to the Wings after doing everything possible in Grand Rapids in the A, he looked like our savior in net.

He took over #1 from Howard. Then a funny thing happened. Howard worked harder. The better he got, the more Mrazek fell apart.

He's done better with the Canes, but from me, who once thought he was the cat's meow, the buyer beware signs are popping up like crazy.

Now that his career has shown him the work ethic, will he maintain it, or get complacent again when he gets a nice contract and the keys to the net.

Because Howard didn't just come back and re-take his seat.

He obliterated him right out of the org and Detroit wanted him gone.

His fall from grace was fast and the hot rumours followed as to why.

My guess is after his awesome success in the A and 1st yr pro, he read his press clippings and figured he's a natural.

I sincerely hope he has a great career, just not with us right now.

Rittich might shred him like Howard did.

Too much risk for me having endured some pretty bad goalie moves.

Maybe Lundqvist will see us these playoffs and go, alright, alright, trade me to Calgary for futures, lol.

You worry and over think most everything. Yes he had some rough season but sometimes a wake up call is all a person needs to get back in the game. He has looked very good with CAR so I wouldn't be afraid to bring him in to go along with Rittich.

  13. 11 minutes ago, conundrumed said:

Would Brodie fetch another 1st, and should that be considered. We're pretty heavy on D. If Fantom is re-signed, he's played both sides. Andersson has taken huge strides. Is Brodie running out of real estate? Or would you look at Hamonic's hard style as someone whose career may have a shorter lifespan?

Brodie would be 1st on my list to deal but I doubt we get a 1st round pick maybe 2-2nds.

  14. 20 minutes ago, conundrumed said:

Same. The playoffs will be telltale imo. A good run would make for harder choices.

We've got some depth below the A, but how much of that you'd identify as Top 6 forward depth is suspect.

I think we'll see a lot of RFA's, particularly with arb rights, not qualified.

The biggest question for me is Stone. He's overpaid and would be the popcorn eater when we can re-sign Fantenberg at < half and move Fanta to RD.

The key to Stone is health. If healthy he will be tradeable. The main decisions will surround Neal, Frolik, Bennett, Jankowski and Brodie IMO. They could also move on from Ryan, Mangiapane and Czarnik. I'm not saying they will but a mix of considerations will be taken into account. Depends on how crazy BT wants to be.

I must have missed those great games that Smith played against COL.  :D

Not this year.  5 goals against in his only start.

Not last year.  Did play against them.

I'm not saying it should be either goalie, just that your stats don;t back up anything.

I prefer going with the experience factor at least to start the playoffs so its Smith for me. Both goalies are playing well enough to start and like the team I have every confidence in Rittich to step in a play well should Smith not play well.

My first question is, why do we invent these scenarios being problems?

End of camp, Vali earned that spot, played in what, 22, then I high ankle sprain.

Andersson's spot was gifted to Stone but he went away and he's not getting that spot back.

So full props to Kylington and Fantenberg for stepping up.

    But that's Vali's well-earned spot, and he's ready.

I get the "uh don't want rookies together". Until you say it's

    Valimaki-Andersson.

Is Andersson even a rook at this point?

I tend to agree with using Valimaki and have Fantenberg back him up, it's why we got him. He has proven reliable in that capacity.

I'm torn on the use of Brodie and Andersson. Given what has transpired over the course of the season I would like to see these pairings.

    Giordano, Andersson

    Hanifin, Hamonic

    Valimaki, Brodie

This has a veteran with each of the younger defensemen and a good mix of there talents.

I think the biggest takeaway is, as a team, we only gave up 15 shots,

It's one of those things. If you aren't scoring you can't hang your goalies for losses. When you are scoring, you have to keep a sound D element to the play.

Smith hasn't given up deflating goals lately, as long as the team can put some goals up, the rest seems to be looking after itself. Solid D, timely saves.

Rittich has cut the playing time in half, which is what we all wanted from the outset.

I don't think any of us wanted a 60-65 game Smith heading into the playoffs.

You don't win the WC regular season by luck. We've had a lot of things go right, sure there have been dips and curves.

That's just team-building stuff. I think everyone is playing for each other and there's accountability.

No one wants to let their teammates down, and when they do, their teammates are there to pick them up.

We may not have a Brodeur, Price or Roy in net, but you don't need that if you have a team that consistently wins more shifts then it loses.

They do find ways to win and I do agree we have a group that plays for each other and that is very important. They need to clean up some areas of their game but who's not ready for the playoffs ? I know I am.

Last night a lot of Smith's plays ended up creating havoc, not in a good way.  Close to the same number that worked.

Teams will expose that if it stays the exact same.

My preference for the starter is athletic and focused.

    Strong glove side.

Plays the puck but does not wander.

    Short passes to the D.

LOL I think we all know your preference for Goalie. LOL

Our defense and I mean all of them have been playing real sloppy/risky hockey. This needs to improve.

PP as not been good and this drop back pass stuff will get killed in the playoffs, we need a way better forechecking game.

I think BP needs to tell both Goalies to tone down the wandering to play the puck, its why we have defensemen.

I don't think the game against the Sharks answered any questions.

    Sharks were unlucky to score.

    PP's were useless.

    9 shots through 2 periods.

    3 GA on 15 shots.

    What have we learned?

I think we can win a series with either guy, but at this point, I have no idea who would be the better starter in Game 1.

Rittich is the better road goalie, but would you split the assignments that way?

I'm more concerned about our breakouts and lack of any consistency for a PP. All these lackadaisical  passes that creates our own havoc has to stop. Teams are going to bottle u the middle zone on us in the playoffs because it gives us our most trouble and turnovers.

I think one of our best acquisitions in recent history is Hakan Loob as Director of European Scouting.

Big trust in his scouting team analyzing the specifics we're looking for. Goalie prospects is definitely one.

If Loob is digging up players like Ngard LW and Zagidulin G he is definitely earning his keep and helping the team.
