I think Sarich talks about it all the time, Warrener too, about the change in ways defenders defend.

im with you. It seems that every team but us tend to take liberties and nearly almost always gets away with it. There aren't enough prices paid. It was what I liked about Gudbranson. Maybe Zadorov is a bit like that, but we need another.

Here here! I was sad to see Gudbranson go. He dished things out, and he was a fine scrapper. Maybe he had more to do with Markstrom's shutouts than has been realized.

I have heard Sarich talk like that too. Fine analyst in my opinion. I am growing sick of Kelly Rhudey's color content. He's becoming a wussy. I suppose he likes the IIHF 'no screening the goalie' rule. BOGUS!!

Stetcher isn't that big but does he ever play big. Nice addition to my team.

My thoughts too. There's got to be a way (I know there is) for the D to knock a guy in front of the net without bloody cross checking him.

That's what I said too about 'good penalties'. Has everyone lost that part of their hockey vocabulary and intellect?

This infactuation with scoring while ignoring good defense is flippin stupid. That kind of hockey, and not jyst the flames but all around the league, is not worth the millions the players are being paid. I can watch similar foolishness at the recreational level or at a game of shinny. I don't like what I'm seeing in 'today's game'.

I forgot to comment on the inability of the players to even tie up a stick in front of the net. conundrumed, you were seeing all the things I was seeing. Stupid hockey, lacking the basic fundamentals we all learned about the game.

I say bring center ice and the neutral zone back. There is more to hockey than speed. Next we'll see the goalies using tennis rackets.

Interesting points on all accounts. I will share that I’ve held management positions at many different businesses, organizations, and associations, and in each and every one of them I never had complete autonomy to do as I saw fit. There are always marching orders, policies, and politics that confine and restrict you to play within the parameters of ownership. So, why stop short of pointing the finger at the GM? There’s been 1 constant throughout the consistent mediocrity that is the flames. Do we honestly believe the Sutter hire was BT? Do we truly believe that BT doesn’t require a rubber stamp of approval prior to every team decision? Word is that an extension offer has been made to BT, and that he is the one considering whether or not to accept returning to the flames. Odd behavior from BT, no? I think the evidence points to multiple rifts in the organization from player-level to coaches, coaches to GM, and GM to ownership. I’d wager that 💩 rolls downhill, and that the hill goes higher than BT.

edit. I should comment on the goaltending since that’s the title of the thread.

We’ve all been waiting for the next kipper. The next Vernon.  The next “messiah” in goal, if you will. I never expected Markstrom to reach that level, but I was happy to see the turnstile of goalies from Ramo to Hiller to Toskala to Smith stop with someone I believed had more consistency. Well, who is Markstrom after all? Is he the guy we saw last season, or the guy we saw during COVID and this season? Hard to say. But, if you look at our player contracts, we’ve got many expiring at the end of next season and I think it’s a prime opportunity to go younger. I’m of the opinion to trade Markstrom and go with Vladar and Wolf in net.

Go with Vladar and Wolfe, period.

A lot was written about how awesome they are last year. Notsomuch this year. Seems like some mechanics issues, not getting square, not playing at the top of the crease. Then there's the issue of dmen that aren't very good harassing guys in front of the net doesn't help.

They have more than enough evidence on tape I would think, but goals keep coming the same way or no one is tieing up sticks on rebounds. Kinda why I was hoping we'd trade for Maatta because it feels like how to defend your net without taking penalties is a lost art. Or take the penalty vs a certain goal.

But Detroit extended him prior to tdl so he became off the table. I think puck-moving dmen have become more value than actual defencemen so this is where it ends up maybe. Fans tend to cheer the points and overlook D atrocity.

Case in point, Erik Karlsson and his ungodly number of even strength goals against. Doesn't seem to matter. He could win the Norris by being the anti-christ of defencemen. Not even a remote possibility he should win it.

My thoughts too. There's got to be a way (I know there is) for the D to knock a guy in front of the net without bloody cross checking him.

So, I lived in NS and worked in Dartmouth/Halifax for 23 years at one job.  Hated the traffic but it was reasonable back in the 2000's.  Downtown a great place to go if you were young and loved to drink.  The beaches were a great escape from the city and better place to see people in real life.  Well, sort of.  Over the years, traffic increased and the council turned the city into a what the two big city Alberta mayors are trying to do.  I won't go there.

Back in about 86 I started cheering for the Flames and only ever cheered for EDM when CGY was done.  But that was only due to Messier.  Cheered him on when he won the cup in NY.  A lot tougher to follow the Flames back then, due to little to no coverage of the Flames until Saturday night or playoffs.  The Iggy trade and later cup run were great.  Cemented me as a fan.

I moved to Ft Mac for a couple of years in the late 2000's.  I lasted about two years before moving to EDM.  Been here ever since.  I love Calgary but can't see ever living there.  Just can't take the amount of highways and "trails" and endless traffic lights.  EDM is not a particularly nice city but it's fine.  Easy to get around in, never get lost.  It's still affordable to rent and own.  My plan is not to live here in winter when I retire.  Winter is cold but little snow compared to CGY or Halifax.  Summer is pleasant but no beaches, man.  Can't see or smell the ocean.

I never cheered for the Oilers since I moved here, nor will I ever want to.  I find their play cheap, much like teh Ducks used to be in games.  They use picks to find a lane to the net and clutch and grab with the worst of teams.  Even the much celebrated McD holds the stick to prevent you checking him.  Other than him, the team is meh.  Give it to or get it from McD.  Stand in one spot for the one timer.  It's not that Draisaitl has a awesome shot, it's that the goalie has to play McD until it's too late.  Draisaitl only needs to aim between the posts and it's likely in.

So, there are very few teams I actually will watch play in the playoffs unless bored.  I like Dallas because I am a Cowboys fan and see them as the underdog some series.  COL is okay to watch, since Nate is from Dartmouth and I like Makar.  Can't stand Vegas and have no interest in SEA.  Leafs, meh.  FLA is fun sometimes, just to see them fail again.  But I'm not going to care one way or the other unless EDM makes it past the 1st round.  Then I cheer hard against them.  With the sound off so I don't have to hear the orgasmic announcers talking about McD picking his nose.

Wish to give you a 👍Like

I say 10% Markstrom because I rank the zero intensity at about half the problem. Then another 25% goes to what is potentially the worst passing team in the league. Just watch the PP. Then there are no finishers when every fan loves Toffoli because he's the only one with a scorers shot. So goaltending falls down the list to the many other issues, especially funneling 40 shots/gm with zero creativity. They get so surprised that they score that they forget that there's still a game going on. They get so discouraged giving up a goal because it might be hard to get it back. So those are pretty huge problems. And I haven't gotten to zero traffic in front of the opposing goalie, like ever...

Add in a coach that spent all year playing the part of make-believe chemist and I really don't care much about bad goals.

A whole team that needs an extra 3 seconds with every puck on their stick is doomed to fail in most leagues, especially this one. The crux of the reason that you need every save. It isn't because every goalie owns us, it's because we're terrible in the O-zone. Did we even score a tic-tac-toe goal this year? Even the worst teams can do that.

    Good summary.

Good thing this isn't your positivity thread.

Good things can happen when you build on the good things.

I gotta at least double your Markstrom percentage.

    I saw those things too:

    -No finishing confidence

    -No creativity

    -Slow processing the puck

-Hot potatoe attitude in the defencive zone

    -Pinball passing

    -not enough crease traffic

    -poor goalie puck play

    -easy predictabilty

-no swagger (like that french coach said)

    -stupid giveaways

-not enough diving when beat on breakaways

-not enough 'good' penalties to stop goals

    -too many bench minors

    -not enough fights😃

Unless you have a 2nd team that you cheer for, that is in the playoffs, I don't see getting pumped up for the playoffs.  I want to see whomever plays the Oilers destroy them.  I would like to see COL come out of the West perhaps, but I could support DAL.  LA would be okay as well.  I won't be cheering for Canada's team even if they are the last one standing.  Only three of them and I don't like any of them.

Same thing here. We cheer for Winnipeg so there is a reason to watch. The coilers are the league's focus because of chimp mcdavid. Already lived through edmontonitis once 35 years ago; no bite this time. Kinda don't give a bean who wins after that. Battle of Alberta my acetone. I mean that positively. The way the game is heading, it is going to lose solid longtime fans.

Ya this team was only built to upset one team at most.  I don't think we go too deep with this roster.

I know it was only one game but I feel Wolf/Vladar would be no worse than Markstrom/Wolf next season.  If the Flames can move Markstrom, then do it.  Even if it upsets Lindholm.  Just rebuild.

    Exactly😃

  9. I guess this is where alot of us branch off to follow different teams in the playoffs. We are going to pull for Winnipeg because they too play an old fashioned hard nosed game. If they are out, I am going to get the camper on the road. I definitely am not going to watch Edmonton (or that boy girl who stiffled Bud Light's beer sales. There is a fish who wants to be in my frying pan😃

I don't put too much stock into shot volume. We look at our top of the league shots. My bet is we are very average when it comes to high danger chances, and then in my view even worse when it comes to eye test high danger chances for.

against, we still tend to leave pucks in bad spots to give great chances to the other team, turnovers etc. some goals shouldn't be scored, but we also give up terrible chances.

While I do agree with you that the goaltending was bad, offence still didn't do enough with their billions of shots they had throughout the season.

The league leading 85 posts and crossbars were obviously not acceptable, and were a heavy reason they didn't make the POs. The crappy goaltending (Markstrom's own admission) was another other heavy reason.

Lindholm and Markstrom are best friends off the ice.  Moving Markstrom would have an impact on Lindholm's decision to extend long term.

But it probably doesn't matter because Markstrom is unmovable in my opinion.

It doesn't matter to me for a different reason. If Lindholm wanted to go because his friend is going then his loyalty is in the wrong place, and he shouldn't be here. Good thing that is just an assumption. I had to make my living without my best friend being there. What kind of baloney would that be?

  12. Well I guess it didn't happen for the bad news bears; maybe it was lack of a great cause.

Those 2 exciting young forwards, and that extraordinary young goalie are ready for the team. I am impressed. They'll get played next year. Walker is ready too.

I feel that Markstrom might want to go; that would make things easier.

That was a great game to end the season (putting aside taking a cup). I'm excited for next year; more so than the coming playoffs.

  13. You still can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want to win now you gotta put bargain shopping aside. Bite the bullet on a tender deal that didn't work and go with the new deal. Markstrom moves if anyone wants him, and I doubt if he is dying to live here, so the team eats the loss.

It looks to me like the team has a couple of talented two hundred foot natural goal scorers ready for next year, and a fantastic tender ready too. If Wolf keeps getting even better it won't be long until he is number one.

Vladar would be a fine backup. Markstrom did the scariest goaltending since Hillier... fear struck my heart everytime the opponents pressed. I don't want that again.

I don't think Markstrom is as untradeable as others think. It'll be a hard deal to make, but one where we probably retain to get value back and for him to fit on another team.

That is the way to think.

How to get rid of Markstrom this summer?  We could run with Wolf + Vladar and save $5-mil cap.

Also, would Lindholm not extend long term if we trade Markstrom?

That is what I was thinking. Markstrom played well the last 20 gamez or so. Maybe the Panthers or someone mighr want him for backup?

I don't think Lindholm would care if Markstrom moves.

I'm the opposite of you.  I am normally one of the last to give up.

I don't like our chances against NAS.

We haven't beaten them all year and they look to be getting Josi back.

    He's huge for their scoring.

Markstrom is the only reason why we are having this debate.

He was part of the biggest problem we had.

Now that he's playing closer to his normal level, we are struggling to score again.

Low scoring games this month, we are 4-2-1.

We have a good schedule where we can exploit non-playoff teams.

The two games in VAN will likely be the deciding point for us.

Lose the first one and we have no margin for error.

WPG is only one factor in our run.

    NAS is another one.

The standings of the top teams will determine what team they ice for those games they play.

What I mean is that COL, MIN and DAL all have games against the two teams we are fighting with.

If they are trying to get home ice, the division or the conference lead that means they ice top players.

If they have the seed set, they can chose to sit key players.

They may even decide they position the lineup so they face a certain team.

Good thinking. That is a lot of work figuring the chances of all that but it's exciting.

I still like the bad news bears. Everybody draw together for a cause and you never know what can happen. Lanny knows that. I hope they do it for the gipper.

We have several players not playing to their level.  Huberdeau, Kadri and Mangiapane have shown what they are capable of.  Not this year.  What we haven't found is a place for each of them.  How many games does it take to realize a LW is not a RW.  Kadri is not as much a skill player as a power forward type, so play him with someone like Nichushkin.  Yeah, we don't really have that.  Mangiapane played with Backlund and Coleman last year, but they were the 2nd line, not just a shutdown line.

My positivity is that we can ice a lineup that matches players to each other.  Duehr's limited icetime shows that we haven't learned.  Suggesting that it's a 4th line that dominates is a little rich.  Untapped potential for a good player.

    travel,

A little rich, but could get points in playoff hockey.

Ya, you're right, we just don' t have enough Duehrs to charge 3 more lines.

Kadri = power forward, ok, but not a great power forward.

Anyway though, every team has to do with what they have. Players need to buy into a coach's and manager's game. The Bad News Bears thing. Great things

    can happen. Like Lanny said.

I forget now, who did he have playing with him?

    Hiberdeau on the wrong wing.

Had Pelletier on LW for 5 or so games.

Who else has played LW while Huberdeau was on RW?

    Lucic?

    I forget.

Sorry for the sarcasm.  Duehr played one shoft with Kadri, then switched up.

    Ya.

Sorry too for the sarcasm. I'm not a fan of Kadri.

The 4th line with Duehr is clicking better than any of the others.

Wish there were 3 more Duehrs, one for each line. Hopefully there are more Duehrs on the way.

I expected more out of Huberdeau. Maybe the Habs will give up their first round pick for Huberdeau (for a first round lottery extravaganza). Maybe Jagr has quit drinking and he will trade Huberdeau for himself.

Maybe Mcdavid will trade up to play with Duehr on the leagues premier 4th line 🤑👊

Can't wait for the coming Massacre of Alberta that the league has planned again at Calgary's expense.

    Stay positive, stay positive now🤐

It's too early to think fishing. I want to see the first round. We haven't given up.

Do you really need to ask?

But, at the time, I believe that at the time, the leading scorers were:

    Phillips

    Pelletier

    Zohorna

Not sure if Zary was up there at that point.

Duehr got in on Jan. 10th, Pelletier not until Jan 21st.

The annoying thing is Duehr only ever plays with the 4th line, almost like they want to justify the 4th line.

Meanwhile Kadri stagnates on the 3rd line with Ritchie.

Kadri stagnates. He's had chances on all the lines, I think.
