  1. My pool picks and the Flames draft implications have me hoping for the Nucks and Knights to come out of the west but I'll openly be rooting for the local guys just as a **** you to anyone who has teams like the Jets, Flames, Sens on their no trade lists.

    /no I'm not bitter.

Ya regardless of the finish, congrats on an excellent first season.

I'm personally disappointed the chat feature was shut down all season.  Makes interacting in the pool very difficult.  Yahoo probably did this to force everyone to download their [s]spyware[/s] app and I'm in protest of that.

Beginners luck? @flames-fan-in-jets-land won last season as a rookie too.

2019 was my first season. I'm easy to forget as I'm usually nowhere near contention.

Interesting...can we just make it the bottom 8? Playoff bubble teams likely don't need much, had IR issues or just hit a bad rough patch. A 16th team never needs nor deserves a #1 pick...2020 draft Rangers (37-28-5), while the Wings...(17-49-5). Just brutal. Yeah...they were trying to lose /s. At least they got Raymond at 4 rather than Lafreniere.

Being the worst team forever without getting top picks kills the market. They need the draft's help. Teams just missing the playoffs are less likely to need the help. Your way would have the very worst team constantly picking 17th. I can hear the fan frustration now.

Gms would adopt different roster strategies. You would see less of the bad contract dumping grounds of Arizona (SLC), and the dreadful asset management of the Oilers all the while having bottom feeders being a bit more hesitant on long term/high $$ contracts (SJ with EK and BUF with Skinner)

    Ahh, I had no idea.

So @postaudioguy, no way man. Ain't happening. To offer another perspective on this draft lottery. They could run it 16.5 times, and we'd have a 99% chance of winning once.

The lottery's a joke. But I guessed it prepped us all for unending gambling ads.

Then, if NJ wants to move that pick, there's likely more suitors offering more than we can offer/make us overpay.

This isn't me being negative, it's me being happy with what we have for picks. Also, as a Wings fan, the lottery is like a bad joke. The NHL is pretending that god awful teams are intentionally losing for 1st overall. And apparently fans have bought in. It's an absolute joke. And insulting. It's a made-up story. Nobody's throwing games. Totally a false premise. So I know the lottery itself is heavily audited. Fair enough. Who is setting the odds? More accurately, manipulating the odds, adding rules and lying, "to make it fairer"? No you're not. Fair is 32 to 1 finishers. You're totally making up the, "throwing games" story. You've manipulated drafts in the past. Pittsburgh? Buffalo? Teams on life support. Toronto, your struggling goldenchild?

But now I should trust you? That's altogether unlikely. How about penalties for teams misbehaving? ARI vs Chicago penalties? Purely manipulating situations.

    It's in their DNA.

Don't have a lottery. Because I trust you less than a team that's 8-42 at all-star break from "throwing" games.

I always thought that a reverse order draft for non-playoff teams (17 - 32) would keep every team fighting till the end. No lottery.

I don't know if it was thought to be in the 20's New Jersey they would've needed to play exceptional hockey to climb that many teams.  Right now I'm having an easier time believing my kids stories about the Easter bunny existing than I do about grown ups who believe a 34 year old goalie, not far removed from being one of the worst starters in the league, will get the greatest return for anyone at that position in the last 20 years.  I won't dispute my kids because it's fun for them, I will dispute Markstrom because its annoying and when the eventual return is underwhelming the complaining is even worse.

Markstrom for the Easter Bunny and a case if creme eggs.

    Do it.

Steinberg calculated that they probably need to go 14-5-1 to get in.

Seems unlikely and probably is. But there are seven games remaining against bottom five type teams. Obviously, they play down to their competition, but if they want to be a playoff team, they can take care of some of the worst teams in hockey. Then it’s 7-5-1 against the remainder of the schedule

Theres also 1 against Edmonton and Vegas, 2 against LA. Winning those 4 would be vital. As would be the game against St.Loo.

  7. TDL has come and gone, moves have been made and theres 20 games remaining.

    Currently:

-6 pts from last wild card spot,

    -4 pts from #8 pick

-11 of the last 20 game are divisional (15 in conference)

I'm not holding hope they'll squeeze in but I'm also not expecting them to roll over and give up either so it most likely be another "mushy middle" finish. The question is how does the season play out vs what do you want to see? Stumble into the playoffs only to face Dallas, Winnipeg or Vancouver (which has trade condition implications) or pick in the mid teens again and hope it turns into a roster player eventually.

There wasnt alot of expectations going into the season but the future looks bright. As a diehard I want to see them get in but if youre going to do a reset this is the time. New faces, new attitudes, new start come October.

Based on his comments ... Fitzgerald wasn't that willing to pay for a new one

Looking at the UFA goalie list for this summer it's pretty weak.. and that's putting it mildly ..

This summer should be much better return and competitive...   If we were willing to take a run at Talbot..and as a last resort , Rittich.. I think we could move Marky for much more a haul return in a competitive market

Why Talbot or Rittich? Talbot is older than Marky and Rittich has been a 3rd string goalie at best the last few seasons. If thats the path in the offseason then target Nedejkkovic, Brossoit, or run with Vladar. I would also guess any deal for Marky would include a goalie coming back.

Saying BS does not discount the fact that it’s the proper way to do things.

proof in pudding no cup since 1989, last final appearance 2004 that’s 2 decades ago or in hockey terms that’s the equivalent of 2 rebuilds and not even a consistent contending team…

Cgy needs to get emotionally invested holding on to players and get into business mode…this is why teams that expanded have won cups in like 6 years or less, why they are consistently better than Cgy has been since 2004

Tanev, Lindhom and Hanifin were selling low cause they were must moves and positions of weakness…

Markstrom is not a must sell, it’s an opportunity to sell high

You mean Vegas? Your stand is based on one outlying season? I'm not going to argue the benefits of keeping/trading Marky but thats a weak foundation to base your reasoning.

I think it's in bad taste to report a guy was asked if he technically wasn't asked.

He may have suggested that he might waive for a certain team or teams.

But that's as unlikely as being formally asked without a deal in place.

What if Connie had said in passing that they might ask him to waive but weren't there yet.

Would you really call that being asked to waive?

If you were a hack "insider" you would.

I think last night's game is a perfect example of why you don't trade Markstrom.. sure ok if a team blows you away with a haul nobody is untouchable.. but it highlighted what having a goalie that always gives you the chance to win any game gives you..

Players like kyllington have the ability to take off ..knowing the back end is covered.. players like Pospisil get involved and are motivated to hate to lose .. players like Zary lose their minutes because they are mailing it in.. message received it's not ok...

Right now the chances of them actually Getting in the playoffs are slim and barely above none..but they believe they can and will..  they see him busting his butt back there and it gives them that little extra push to find the next gear..

Winning is a culture that you learn when you know you always have a chance

A lesser goalie , that game is over after the second period .. maybe even before the puck is even dropped

Look at new jersey right now .. they have a contending lineup aside from their goaltender.. and they're getting shelled lately because as soon as they allow that first bad goal you can almost see them give up.. when your star player trashes the goaltending in the press you have a culture problem..

I think it's pretty apparent at this point he's not being moved for the sake of moving him..

This season and two years ago yes, last season and his first with the team, not so much. It seems either feast or famine with him and his history shows next year could very well be another down year. I'm not advocating to move him just because but I dont think moving him would negatively affect the "culture" too much. They're all professionals and as long as they trust the system and the timeline they'll be fine.

I know it's been been to death but tanking is a crapshoot ... You can win the lottery and end up up with Yakupov.. or be totally brutal and lose out on McDavid ..so much is out of a teams control..  but building the right culture is controllable..

Players like Getzlaf and others  were mid to late round picks .. it comes down to drafting and scouting ..

The very fact they even are entertaining the idea of moving Markstrom shows the mentality has shifted away from the one that saw us hold an Iggy for way too long..

BT likey would have given Lindholm the extra mill or whatever it is he wanted to get him to stay here .. Conroy values the desire to be here over the paycheck ..

Culture shift... He has the right idea

That is the shift that needed to happen. Going back to Conroys statement pre season and by Colemans recent quote the environment in the lockerroom starts with filling it with people who want to be here. It already seems to be turning for the better, just need to see how it holds up after all is said and done post TDL.

His play goes beyond his points though. He's really solid in all areas and has a profile of a player that will eventually pop. A lot like Travis Konecky.

Yes he may not be a top line PPG guy but I think he's the type of player GMs crave to have because of how many ways he can impact the game.

Thats fine and all but I think a main piece should be more of a difference maker since thats whats going the other way.

It doesn't matter how we view the player as it does how NJ views him.

    1st year in the NHL 17 goals, 2nd 27 goals, 3rd 15 so far.

RHS C that can play the wing.

Zary may be close to him in numbers, but they are the same age; one in his 3rd NHL season.

No argument that he could be a very good player, hes just not at the point that hes the key piece coming back. If Tanev and Hanifin are gone then you need replacements

    Markstrom + 3rd for Nemec + Vanacek

Jersey wants to win asap, make them pay.

    I get it.

I don't agree with it is what I'm saying.  I have no idea what the Devils offered so i'm not trying to suggest the Flames are doing anything wrong. If the idea is it has to be Mercer or you move on then IMO the Flames are making a mistake.  For example if the flames were offered Hotlz and said no that be a mistake IMO.

If it were me, I would not be happy to have Markstrom here for 2 more years if you are getting good trade offers now. Set a high price sure but don't make it unreasonable.

History has also shown us that Marky having a good year tends to mean the next one wont be, which in turn negatively affecting his value. That tells us the time to move him would be now but it would be nice if there was a better picture how Wolf is going to transition then maybe that gives you some direction moving forward.

IF Marky gets traded tomorrow you've got a Wolf/Dansk combo until Vladar comes back. Get rid of 2 veteran D men also and you're setting up your tandem for failure.

I would think they're not reluctant to do it ..it just has to make sense ..  they've never been shy to buy out a player and that's probabaly been way higher $ overall..  last time they retained was David Rittich to Toronto ..  but they only have 3 spots and this would tie one up for 2 more years ..

I'd suspect the return and the retain go hand in hand .. NJ wants us to retain the return just went up.. id be wanting a significant roster player on top of the pick and prospects.. at the very least a Dawson Mercer or similar

And also ..Calgary is in the driver's seat on this one.. they're not actively trying to move him.. but they're open if the offer is right.. there's no deadline, so meet our price or no deal

Exactly. Theres really no time constraint to move Marky as opposed to Tanev and Hanifin. My worry is if Conroy is taking time listening to offers for Marky then the Tanev/Hanifin scenario is either at a stalemate or there hasnt been an offer worth noting. I would hope the focus is still on the D men and this is just a stalling tactic to gain interest in the offerings.
