  1. When Treliving bought out Brouwer, I wonder if he had to consult ownership. I can see owners getting cranky when you acquire a guy at that price point and then send him packing with a big bag of cash.
  2. Seth Rogen will be the voice of Vancouver Transit. Riders will hear him encourage passengers to be polite to one another. Edmonton, of course, chose Tommy Chong. I cannot think of a more fitting person to be the voice of Edmonton Transit. Well, maybe Andrew Dice Clay.
  3. Agreed. Another issue that I think needs to be addressed is this sakamoto ideology that you play regardless of your health. It was not appropriate for Monahan to be pulled from play as he was this last year. You run the risk of creating more serious physical problems. Smith is among this generation of players that believes you go in no matter what. I really think that needs to change. Having a flexible schedule may be the way to go. You are also correct that you want to take advantage of when a player/goalie is feeling like he can do no wrong.
  4. I wish him well of course. I was more wishing that he had turned it around with the Flames.
  5. Unfortunately, that likely sums up our situation. I find it difficult to believe that Treliving would stake his job on our current goaltending. Maybe he comes up with more magic this summer. Man, I am going to be choked if Eddie Lack comes up big this year.
  6. They do need those games to build up confidence. I suspect that each player is unique in this regard. Some maybe need more home games to be shored up by fans. Others might need the boringness of playing against the Buffalo Sabres or the California Golden Seals. Anyone else remember them? It is not an Austin Powers reference. The problem is that every year we are paranoid to lose the early games (get off to a good start), then we want to continue playing the hot, main goalie in late November/December, then things start going downhill in late February, so the #1 clearly has to play, and by the end of the season, we burn out the #1 because we are just a point or two shy of the playoffs. Treliving and Peters need to work together to develop a plan to move the young goalies into the NHL. I think that mean structured flexibility (I realize they are in contention) in scheduling. I think that I would start Gillies in Florida. He seems to get way too much adrenaline into his body when starting in Calgary. He then makes a terrible blunder and the team gets rattled. Hopefully, Treliving has addressed the rattling situation. Actually, screw it. Let's just take a look at what Edmonton does and do the exact opposite.
  7. While I agree with your logic on this matter, I am unclear as to how the Flames can improve. When we bring in more goaltenders for increased competition, they need to play somewhere. Should we avoid drafting goalies and wait it out for Gillies? If he does not turn out to be effective, have we dug our own grave? Also, I wonder how long we give such a prospect. He is 24 now. Should we wait until he is 26, 28? I don't have the answers to these questions. I am just interested in how others see goaltender development.
  8. I generally agree with your assessment the vast majority of the time. I have often said that for the money these guys enjoy, they need to learn how to self-motivate. A coach cannot be held responsible for that. The theme of the current NHL, however, is parity. Any team, maybe even the Oilers and Canucks, can win on any given night. Thus, minor mistakes can be costly. I just thought that he overplayed Brouwer in the wrong places at the wrong times, was unwilling to consider changes, and overplayed Smith. We have debated this issue several times already and I am sure neither of us want to reopen that debate. I agree with you that coaches cannot make teams win, but they can make decisions where winning is far more difficult.
  9. Check it out Chia. Tavares is leaving the Islanders. You think McDavid will stay in Edmonton forever out of pure loyalty and the shiny new building?
  10. Move out McDavid to reshape the team. I am sure that Oiler fans would trust Chia to make that trade.
  11. I suppose that there are different models of team structure. Vegas seems to roll relatively balanced lines/player talent whereas Chicago has a lot invested in just two players. Other teams seem to identify a core player and work around him. I kind of like the structure Treliving appears to be implementing. That is, have a top line, but spread out the rest of the talent over the other three lines. I find it interesting how Treliving seems to want two centres on every line for face-offs. Not a bad strategy given how they hand out penalties on the draw these days.
  12. All teams have their problems. Edmonton's almost seem impossible to fix. They better get things on track though because McDavid is unlikely to stay there losing forever.
  13. Oh boy. After reading your post above and TD's post regarding their limited cap space, I decided to go over there myself. Optimistic is not a word I would use to characterize their board. How can they be so cash strapped after shipping out all of those high picks!? They only have McDavid, Draisaitl, and RNH left. Lucic is struggling, Puljujarvi and Slepyshev are not exactly super stars. That club looks to be in ruins. McDavid is a truly great player, but he sure eats up a lot of cap space. Chicago made that work for a bit and Pittsburgh have done well with one player eating up that much. I would rather have more second tier players myself.
  14. Could be totally bogus information, but I read elsewhere that Chia wanted to move Lucic and demanded a core piece with no salary retention. Someone should remind him that pot isn't legal until October.
  15. I guess that I still have respect for him then because I assume he is now paid bank to do nothing for another 4 years.
  16. Garth Snow was fired!? Mitsubishi, I missed that! I held an enormous amount of respect for the guy, so I find his firing really disappointing. If someone that incompetent can make that much money, I might have a chance some day when I grow up. Okay, I am 50, but still...
  17. I agree with your post for the most part. I am not sure that he compares with Butler though. Butler shares the inability to make a solid first pass, but he also was less reliable in the defensive zone IMO. Butler scared me at times, whereas Kulak just bores me. A boring defenceman is not necessarily a bad thing.
  18. Kulak is generally a solid defenceman. He can eat up quite a few minutes and doesn't scare a person. It looks to me like he has worked on and addressed any problem areas he has had. You need guys like that because they play well for relatively few dollars.
  19. If we do get another goalie, I sure hope that he is a true #1 contender. Spending more assets on half measures should not be an option.
  20. I find that rather disturbing. Perhaps it is not surprising, but it is concerning. I understand that such projects are going to generate conflict. Each party has to protect their interests. I will be upset if we host the Olympics and many of the hockey games are played in Edmonton because it will be an opportunity lost. Refusing to externalize the arena costs to the provincial and federal governments will be a slap in the face to the Flames. It is one thing to hold strong in negotiations. It is another thing to intentionally waste such an opportunity.
  21. I am a little skeptical about it not being a problem. I believe I read somewhere that the creosote has been found on the other side of the river. Apparently, there is another river underneath the river. I would assume that the 2013 flood must have resulted in the chemical moving downstream. Regardless, a big chunk of the inner city is not useable; not a tourist attraction. I agree that they have completed all of those studies suggesting that it was a poor idea. I have never quite understood why the Flames then suggested a multi-complex in the very area that was considered inappropriate. Have they not been talking over the years?
  22. It is concerning that the area is a non-starter. The area needs to be cleaned up sooner than later. I would like to know what, if anything, is being done about the creosote? I understand that there are concerns about transportation as well.
  23. Some of us have significant expectations for Treliving this summer. I would really like him to shore up the RW spot on the first line so that we can move a few players down the lineup. We would still have Ferland as an option to be moved up from time to time. That would give Peters some flexibility and allow him to properly work on/fit in players like Bennett and maybe Lazar. Realistically, however, there are only so many options for him to consider. He cannot force a team trade with him, and very good-excellent RW players are often in short supply at a high cost (prospects, picks, salary). My question is, what exactly are realistic or appropriate expectations for him? If he does not acquire a RW, should this reflect poorly on him? A GM is responsible for providing a winning roster. In this era, can a GM really swing amazing trades that benefit their teams? Lastly, in this era of hockey, is it fair to say that the Winnipeg model of slow and steady team development mostly through the draft is the only one given that we live in an information era? Chiarelli aside, there are not that many chumps left in the league.
  24. Thank goodness my kids are in their 20 and 30s. I wouldn't want them to experience your potty mouth sir!
  25. I agree with you that he did his homework before he hired GG. But, he spoke about the process being so important that it came across as rushed when he hired Peters so quickly. As well, the coaching options this time are different than last time. I doubt that he interviewed AV or Sutter last time around. I did due diligence when I bought my last truck. When I buy the next one, I am not just going to go with a new version of this one. I will see what new options exist. ETA: In two to three years, we might all be buying electric, autonomous vehicles.
