  1. Ortio named to 2013-14 AHL All-Rookie Team CALGARY, AB -- Abbotsford Heat goaltender Joni Ortio has been named to the American Hockey League’s 2013-14 All-Rookie Team. In his first full season of hockey in North America, Ortio has helped fuel Abbotsford’s return to the Calder Cup Playoffs after compiling a 24-8-0 record in 34 appearances. The 22-year-old’s 24 wins places him sixth overall among goaltenders while his 2.37 goals against average is eight-best. Ortio's .924 save percentage was also third overall among goalies. Coaches, players and media in each of the league’s 30 member cities vote on the award. Previous goaltenders to receive the honour include current NHLers J.S Giguere, Cam Ward, Jaroslav Halak, Jimmy Howard and Eddie Lack. Ortio also marked the 2013-14 campaign with his National Hockey League debut, posting a 4-4-0 record with a 2.51 goals against average and .891 save percentage in nine appearances. The native of Turku, FIN was originally drafted by the Flames in the sixth round (No. 171) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
  2. Ortio with the 1st star of the game in last nights 2-1 OT Heat win stopping 43/44 shots. He's 4th in GAA at 2.21, and Tied for 1st in Save % at 0.928 I couldn't be happier seeing him back with the Heat, I'm beyond excited for the Heat's play-off push.
  3. In their first NCAA Tournament game, Calgary Flames prospects Mark Jankowski and Jon Gillies came up big for the Providence College Friars. Jankowski, who was the Flames 2012 first round pick, scored the game-winner at the 3:37 mark of the first period and the Friars added three more goals in the second stanza, collecting a 4-0 victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats. Gillies made 37 saves in the victory. The Flames 2012 third round pick is now 19-8-5 this season with four shutouts to his name. His GAA sits at 2.13 and he has a .931 save percentage through 33 games. Providence will move on to face Union on Saturday in the East Regional final. It was Providence's first NCAA Tournament victory since 1991
  4. YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH, Been waiting for this to happen, slowly the Heat will start to get reinforcements.
  5. If Ortio is not getting majority starts in the NHL he should be sent down to get into the play-off mindset Troy Ward is instilling in the Heat team right now. With the recent/upcoming returns of players, some kids should be sent down here soon aswell. With that being said Ortio IS getting majority starts, so he should stay. There's only 13 games left, the Heat is about to receive some much need reinforcements so I highly doubt they will lose a playoff spot, home advantage most likely, but they can get past that.
  6. He's been destroying it in the AHL, and yes I understand its not the NHL, but compared to Berra its embarrassing the numbers he's put up. As People1 said If Ramo is only going to stick around to be a starter he needs to beat out Ortio for next year, and if he cant handle being a back-up and fighting for the starter position well than cya later. I assume Ortio goes back to the AHL to finish off the season/play-offs after Ramo gets back, with Jmac backing up Ramo.
  7. Ramo will be traded away just like Berra was, Ramo is not our future, The fact Ortio is outplaying them at 22 is beyond me, He even got his 2nd assist last night. I don't see Ramo lasting long here. And if he does its as a back-up.
  8. Seems hes gone already, Heat signed Aaron Dell again from the Utah Grizzlies HEAT SIGN GOALTENDER AARON DELL March 8, 2014 - 1:03 PM Abbotsford, BC - The Abbotsford Heat announced today that they have signed goaltender Aaron Dell. He made his first start in a Heat uniform on February 23rd, 2014 against Chicago in a 2-0 loss. In 23 games with the Utah Grizzlies (ECHL) this season, Dell has registered a 15-6-0 record with a 2.10 GAA and a .920 save percentage. AARON DELL – GOALTENDER BORN: Airdrie, Alberta DATE: May, 4 1989 HEIGHT: 6’0’ WEIGHT: 209 lbs. SHOOTS: Left
  9. I agree with this, And i'm glad everyone is finnaly getting to see Ortio for the beast that he is, I knew he was going to push past Ramo/Berra so I never really paid any attention to them. It would kill me if Ortio only stayed up to play every 4 to 5 games, this kid needs in the net period. It doesnt matter if its on the Heat or the Flames, He needs to be starting. He said before in a interview with the Heat awhile back, that he performs better in those big games(play-offs, ect) That poise and confidence this kid has does not falter. I'm really looking forward to watching him and the Heat make a deep push, once this flames season is over alot of kids are heading back to the Heat for the play-offs, and we couldnt ask for much more.
  10. Saturday night Jmac was in net not Roy. I wish Ortio was down with the Heat aswell, They seem abit off without some of their key members. But with the possibility of NHL games right now, hes going to be learning alot more for the time being. Then when Ramo is back from injury, Ortio will go back down to the heat, and help with them with the rest of the season and the play-offs, If I lived closer I would be getting some play-off tickets.
  11. 1st people want to blame berra for most of his loses and get a better goalie, and now that we have Ortio that is just plain outplaying berra(AHL), You guys are wanting to ride berra. Ortio is above the curve on all of our goalies, but he's still only 22, He needs game time not sitting on the bench time. If Ortio doesnt see a game, I hardly see this as a positive, Sure he gets to sit in net for practice's and such, But as every hockey player as ever said, practices are not game speed whether you want to try and emulate that or not. Ortio wants to be with the flames so do alot of the Heat players, But if they're not going to get ice time, its a waste of time being up.
  12. The heat play 4 games this week, today/tomorrow vs the charlotte checkers and saturday/sunday against the texas stars. From that standpoint i'm kinda sad Ortio is up with the flames (Unless he gets a start and succeeds), with Jmac hurt that was alot of playing time for him this week. But on the flip side we get to see what oliver roy has in his bag of tricks. I just hope Ortio doesnt sit on the bench for the next 3 games with the flames.
  13. Eh your's just made me realize, there's others looking at the standings and thinking the same thing, Ive seen others say the same as you did. But luckily we dont have feaster anymore. So I doubt burke would blow up this team for a chance at the playoffs this/next year.
  14. The point is, do we want to be a bottom seed playoff team for a long time just because a goalie can carry us. Its the same crap as with iggy and kipper they could only carry us so far, its gonna end up monahan and xxx as goalie. Were going to achieve nothing in the playoffs, and get nothing in with that draft pick.(who knows we could be blessed and get someone) We cant just look at the standings and the goalies and be "if we had x here instead of berra we would be in the playoffs" Aiming for the playoffs at this time, and moving pieces to make it happen would set us back farther than most can imagine, Reminds me of what vancouver is going through, they're going to need to retool fast or its the bottom for them aswell here soon.
