  1. I'm actually really thankful for Wideman's contract if it means we can't afford Russell long term.

All this talk about RHS D, I think Calgary needs to target a LHS stable, possesion driving guy to play with Dougie. The summer of 2017 will be fun for us fans.

  2. I'm a big Bernier supporter. He's a former 11th overall pick a year and a half removed from having the leagues fourth highest even strength save-percentage. This season has been dismal for him but I think he will bounce back. Even though last year was disappointing he had the same sv% as Ramo.

When you look at the options available in the offseason, you basically have Hiller, Ward, Bishop, Anderson, Reimer and Bernier who've proven they can be starters in this league.

Cam Ward and Hiller haven't put together decent seasons in 4+ years

Anderson and Bishop will cost a 1st minimum. His numbers are also inflated by playing in front of one of the NHL's best teams.

There may be another hidden gem out there in Enroth or Raanta but they can be brought in as a back up to minimize the risk.

I believe this is a classic case of buy-low and it can work out very well for the Flames future.

  3. It's very true to say that the flames need to improve their drafting and development of goalies, but right now they don't have that time. They have a very strong core and the window will open in about 3 years for about 5 or 6 years. Maybe Gillies is ready by that time or maybe he's still not as good is Bernier, Varlamov etc.

Ortio needs to step up his game as it has taken a nosedive in the most crucial year. Thos includes his AHL play.

  4. I actually like some of what I saw from Raanta in last night's game. I don't think we need to go for both Bernier and Raanta, one would do us.

I think we need 2 quality goalies. If both these guys could be had for a decent price, why not hedge our bets?

Next season is next season. I am loathe to wait till then to solve it. There are legit things we can do right now to improve, and it involves moving Hiller. At the very least, we should waive him. He isn't even the short-term answer anymore.

Make the move now to improve. Evaluate the rest of the season with Ramo any whomever. Look for a permanent solution in the summer; that may include the whomever.

I don't think waiving him without a replacement is a good plan. He is way below his career avg and his numbers will stabilize big time. Ortio on the other hand has never demonstrated an ability to save .915 of pucks at the NHL level.

  5. I would say Bernier is a cut above Ramo and Hiller. As a matter of fact I'd say he could be the next Tuuka Rask, getting away from headlines that talk about how much he ate before the game or some nonsense and able to focus again.

Calgary is still tough on players psyches, but it could be a nice cheap short term experiment with upside. He's shown the ability to steal games and he's still a young man with upside.

The biggest issue would be clearing up the crease for him to come over. Too bad the draft lottery rules changed.

  6. I'll let the very knowledgeable Kent Wilson take preface this thread with some background info:

I know the Flames need to work on their defensive coverage. I know they have some good looking prospects, but I seriously believe we need a new goaltender to step up for us over the next 3-5 years. What do you guys think about the options from that article or perhaps looking at some other targets?

My ideal candidates to start next season would be Bernier (who just rattled off 3 straight shutouts in the AHL) and Raanta.

    Here's how I would approach:

Trade Deadline: Hiller and Wotherspoon for Bernier, Toronto gets rid of a 4M cap hit next year and acquires a decent defensive prospect that Calgary is no longer high on.

Free Agency: Sign Raanta for 1.5M

I feel like this would be a good combo moving forward. I like the way Bernier has responded to the "conditioning stint"

Other options I wouldn't mind investigating Varlamov, Bishop, or Anderson.

    Thoughts?

  7. If it makes anyone feel better. Jon Gillies just got his second shutout in his first three AHL games with a 36 save performance including what some are calling a save of the year candidate in the third period.

  8. I think the best move would be to put Ramo on waivers.

    Pros

-If he's claimed, problem solved, no more controversy, like the signing never happened.

-If he's unclaimed, we then have a great insurance policy if one of Hiller or Ortio implodes or is injured.

-We also have a great trade chip if there is a team in need of an NHL calibre goalie.

-Could work well with Gillies in the minors as a mentor.

    Cons

-It will affect Gillies playing time. (Though any goalie going down will)

-Bad player relations, sign and send down.

-He's playing great right now. But everyone is.

  9. How do i skip ahead on an Iphone?

I really, really wish even now that this had happened last year, even though I don't expect many to agree. I think we would be going into this year with more solid goaltending, and maybe Connor McDavid too. Hiller was great, but he "enabled" the Flames to ignore their goaltender development obligations for yet another year.

Sorry technical difficulty. You can't be serious in the above quote. You'd give up two rounds of playoff hockey and an amazing development year for our top young guys? There's a team up north that follows a strategy you'd love.

Development is all about patience, not rushing prospects so you can lose and get more prospects. Ortio also got injured for the last quarter of the season. Who's our backup then?

  10. Everyone seemed to roast the Flames defense at the beginning of the year, now we are first in offense from the blueline in the NHL. Not to mention most shot blocks and fewest penalties taken.

I especially wanna make a shout out to Dennis Wideman. Everyone has be screaming to trade him all season and he has set a career high and is currently 7th in defensive scoring.

Also, England is stepping it up in a way that nobody saw coming. The guy isn't just some Bollig/jackman. He actually has abilities and plays an intelligent game.

We wouldn't be where we are without our defense. We may be lacking solid defense prospects but our defense right now is just fine.

  11. Phil is actually really similar to Iginla. They're both inconsistent within seasons, but very consistent year to year. I think The biggest difference is toughness, mental and physical.

I would love to have Kessel on this team hands down. Gio would insulate him in a way Phaneuf never could. However, the core of our offence is all 20 years old or so. I think Phil would be ideal to bring in with a strong core hitting their mid twenties as an offensive catalyst. Not so great a teacher for young guys.

Also cost would be a huge issue. I feel Backlund is a huge part of this team and our D prospects need upgrades through this year's picks. Also I feel that our core is untouchable (bennett, Gio, Brodie, Money, Jonny (good number one PP unit in a few years))
