Do the Flames fire BT immediately if he's unable to come to terms with JH and his camp?

Do not discount the influence from others within the organization.  Murray Edwards is a very hands on type of guy and I would think he's heavily involved in this.  I'm confident it'll get done, the only question is length of contract.  I'd be disappointed with a bridge contract but at this point, not surprised.  It also seems Lewis Gross is playing hard ball so it's not fair to put too much blame on the Flames.

  2. Very well written article.. I'm starting to like the idea of Reimer more and more.  His window to get paid is next year , sign him to a very affordable 1 year deal.. back him with an up and comer or even a good backup (Enroth)

gotta think if Im BT- im getting annoyed at the ridiculous return requests , tell them all to go pump sand.. Sign Reimer.. come back in year and pick at their carcasses :)

Next year , around this time

That was an entertaining read.  I agree the Calgary and Reimer are a natural fit.  With Pitts seemingly not keen on trading MAF, at least not for a reasonable deal, i'd get Reimer.  He's a decent goalie and shouldn't break the bank.  $3*3.

  3. I'd much rather a meticulous GM than an impulsive one. Deals you rush into don't tend to work where in many occasions the best deal is the one you don't make.

Goes both ways. Being patient landed them Hamilton.

Personally I think had the flames made the Anderson deal they would regret it. That's a lot of return and cap hit for what I consider an average goalie.

He's certainly meticulous and not impulsive.  I just hope he was in on Andersen and lost because it was a divisional thing...or the price was too high.  Last year I thought we missed out on Talbot and Jones as well and ended up back with Ramo.  I'm nervous that we're sitting here once again in late June with very little as far as goalies go.

  4. Is our GM slow ?  I'm getting frustrated how long things are taking to get done.  Took way too long IMO to fire Hartley, then took a long time to to hire the new coach.  Nothing on the Gaudreau / Monahan contract or any other contracts.  Missed out on Andersen.  I'm not going to judge him on any one of these but I see a pattern developing.  I guess one thing is for sure, he's not impulsive !

  5. The Flames also have the pick of any team looking to get rid of a goalie. There aren't many other teams looking for one right now and if Calgary trades the 6th, then Fire Treliving because that's just as bad as Feaster deals.

That's one way to look at it and it's true.  Another fact is they currently don't have a Goalie under contract who's played a singe game !  Other GMs know this and maybe this is why the ridiculous offer of 6OA for Fleury.

  6. If you look at their 2nd contract, you see what the market should be for Johnny and Monahan.  The career numbers for both are similar to what Johnny and Mony produced.  Toews and Kane got $6.3m over 5 years.  Now, project $6.3m from 2010 to 2016 dollars.  If you consider the results to be anywhere similar to Toews and Kane, then a 5 year deal at $6.75-7m is reasonable.

Buying years of UFA is what bumps it up a bit more.  Tarasenko's deal is far more desirable when you buy those years.

Inflation, future value of 2010 dollars, and buying UFA years all account for deals in the range of $6-7.5m.  Using a bridge deal bumps up the future cost of resigning these players.

And your numbers, which I agree with, don't even take into account the marketability of Johnny Hockey.  Every kid in Calgary and in other cities are getting on the Johnny Hockey bandwagon.  The Flames would be wise to get him signed to 8 years right now and not mess around with bridge contracts.

  7. IMO, the term on both of these guys is a no-brainer.  8 years.  Monahan and JH (especially Johnny) put bums in seats and they are the franchise going forward.  Even if it's $8 million for JH, they have to do it.  I'm not sure what's taking so long with this but I'm starting to get worried.  Although BT doesn't seem to be a guy who rushes anything.

  8. I agree, it would be good to bring in a couple of goalies that can not only challenge each other but grow with the team at an affordable contract situation.

I kind of like that idea too.  Bring in two good young guys who can push each other.  With Gillies and Ortio also in the mix, someone should emerge. I think it's a mistake to bring in one expensive vet and anoint them the new king.

  9. well.. a .918 would be an improvement to our bunch. My biggest knock on Reimer is he has yet to play a full season . I wouldn't be upset if we ended up with him.

I wouldn't be upset either.  He's solid and the right age.  This talk of expansion is really costing him $$$ as the best UFA on the market.  If Calgary can't make a trade for a good up and comer, I'd settle for Reimer. Not sure what it would take but I think his price probably has come down from $4ish to maybe $3 ish.  If they could get him in the 3-4 range for 2 years, I'd be all over it.

  10. Nick Schneider is having a great start in Stockton. Small sample and doesn't mean much. But a good start, especially for an 18 year old making his pro debut.

I'm following that as well.  Glad to see the Flames have another decent prospect in goal to go with MacDonald and Gillies.  Good goaltending partly comes from internal competition and we're looking better as far as that goes.

  11. I also agree that the Flames are a good no. 1 goalie away from competing for the playoffs.  Throw in a top line RW, and we might be a threat.  Ortio and Ramo have shown flashes and when they do, this team is competitive with pretty much anyone except maybe the Chicago/Anaheims.  BT's biggest challenge is obviously strengthening the goalie position and that means more than one guy.  They need better everything in goal: coaching, prospects and a no. 1.  I guess they're no bad enough to snag one of those Finns...unless the lottery goes our way.

  12. Have to side with those questioning Hartley.  His decision to keep coming back to Hiller is to me, giving up.  What message does that send to the skaters on this team when he keeps putting in a goalie who's obviously lost his confidence.  As a fan, I like it because I want the higher pick but it's got to be tough on the players when your coach isn't giving you the best chance to win.

  13. I really thought Backstrom looked good.  Everything just seemed more calm with him in there.  I know it's Montreal and everything but i'd like to see him again.  I'd like to see Ortio and Backstrom finish the season together... not sure why Hiller's getting another start tomorrow.  Hartley seems determined to keep giving him chances for some strange reason.

  14. if the expansion draft happens and Flames are still looking for goaltending this would likely be good chance to pick one up, either before the draft so that team can get back a player or pick for their investment, or at the draft due to the 1 goalie limit on protect.

I agree, this might be Calgary best chance to get a good up and coming tender at a reasonable price.  Then add a vet to the mix and we're set.

  15. Put me in the camp of, BH, what are you thinking !!??  Maybe I just have my fan hat on but I've seen enough Jonas Hiller. At least throw the fans a bone and let's see Ortio.  Frankly, I'd rather see Backstrom at this point.  I don't want to be too hard on Hiller but IMO, he's lost his job on this team.

  16. That was the 4th game of the mythical Ortio run last year.  Flames won in OT on Wideman's no-goal goal (reviewed after stoppage and it was in).  He was 4-0-0 after that game with a shutout.  He had a 1.23 GAA and .958 SA% during that stretch.  This game was followed by Ortio letting in 3 on 8 shots against Anaheim.

Yeah, he stood on his head during that stretch last year then had a stinker against the Ducks and was gone.  I think that was the first indication BH had no faith in him.  Such a short leash for a guy who delivered 4 straight wins.  Oh well, hope he comes up big tonight and keeps the net.

  17. Why would we trade for a warm body to stop playing Hiller? There is no point giving up assets for this year. The few assets we have need to be used for longer term help. We should stop playing Hiller and give Ortio a run. He might even show he's worth an extension which would at least mean we have one goalie next year

I'm not keen on giving up assets either so maybe a minor league swap of some kind.  I think they only have 3 goalies right now between the Flames and Heat.  If there's an injury or two.... Anyway I have to believe they'll add somebody to the mix.

  18. I think that's too far.  I would say mediocre is a better description.  I still think he's a starter on a bad team and a backup on a good one. So he had a bad game.  The game before, he was great, and everyone on here loved him.   this has to be one of the most up-and-down, emotional threads on the forum.

We're rebuilding.   That's why I think we should be looking at our younger goaltenders.

And at the end of the day....we're not even talking about our biggest problem...defence.

No our biggest problem is Goaltending.  The problem is Hiller is literally, the worst Goalie in the NHL.  That's what the statistics say and he sure looks like it when watching him play.  The Flames need at the very least, a warm body at the TDL so they can stop playing Hiller.

  19. Sure there is always room for improvement, in EVERY area.  However most of your points were kind of comical, and hey, a good laugh is a good thing.  Thanks.  No need to refute all your points, not sure you'd be listening.

Oh, BTW, I guess you overlooked how terrible the Wild are with their goalies.  They are absolutely destroying their Vezina-level goalie this year..... His Sv% and GAA are dropping precipitously.

Of course competition is healthy.  They will be seriously competing against each other, plus whomever the Flames already have in place.  Its just that if they likely will be ready in 2 years, its poor management to have another (lessor) guy signed for 2 additional years.  Doesn't that kind of sound familiar?  Like, exactly the problem we have at the moment with a bunch of guys that needed to be gone last year?

I'd love to see Gillies/McDonald pass Reimer in 2 years but Reimer is a 27 year old with over 200 starts and a .914 save percentage on a bad hockey team.  To assume Gillies / McDonald will pass him in 2 years is very optimistic.  I hope it happens but I'd hedge my bets.

  20. Look, in two years we're going to have two young goalies, at least, chomping at the bit waiting for their opportunity.  Giving anybody 4 years is a mistake unless its clear he can be our #1 for the foreseeable future.

I think it's a mistake to give Gillies or McDonald a clear path, they should have to win the job or steal it away from someone.  Internal competition is healthy.

  21. With Ramo hurt he is clearly the best fa option available so I'm a bit worried about what it would take. Martin Jones had never been a starter and he got over 3 mill, talbot turned half a season of average caliber starting play into 4 million, Ramo with limited NHL experience got 3.8 and so on and so on.

I'd keep the deal to 3 years or less personally I just don't like long term deals unless it's a legit starter and I'm not sure Reimer is that. If the flames could do a 2 or 3 year deal for less than 4 million I would be interested but I feel like him being th top fa on the market will mean he'll get more and I wouldn't do that. Reimer has good stats on a bad team but he is very inconsistent so handing him 50-60 games a year worries me.

I agree with everything you say.  I think of Reimer as a 1A so he's going to need help and a salary that allows for that.  That said, the Flames more than anyone would likely roll the dice a little bit.  If they up the term to 4 years, they might land him at a reasonable cap hit.  I know it's a gamble but his age is good, he's a western guy, and he's been on a bad team his entire career.  I think he has some upside.

  22. I think the Flames would be wise to keep their goaltending in a short term situation until Mr.Right is determined.

Maybe but look what that gave the Flames this year.  Top 5 goalie cost and worst goaltending in the league.  I'd give Reimer term, mostly because I like him but also because it would reduce his cost.

  23. I've always liked James Reimer ever since his Red Deer Rebels days.  TO is a mess so I wouldn't be surprised to see him hit the open market in July.  At 27, I have to believe he's got some good years left.  Wonder what a 4 year deal would cost ?  Calgary's goalie situation has to be keeping BT up at night.
