Yeah I would really like a RH C or RW. Been a very long time since they’ve drafted a impactful right handed forward. I also think a goalie will be drafted this summer likely in the 3rd round at the earliest

I agree, I have been on the RW power forward band wagon for many years. But lately they filled this position with trades and late round picks so not as critical as it used to be. However this year I have a feeling they could grab a goalie in the 1st round maybe Spencer Knight.

    If not then a RHD.

I don't think there is, nor should there be, any consensus on how the Flames should pick. Should always just pick BPA anyway but with them having needs all over it should really just be BPA.

BPA is not always a good thing.  What if every time they pick BPA is a goalie?  so the 2019 draft they walk away with 7 goalies.

This happened to us in the last 10 years no RW was picked so we had to go trade for one.

True but both fox and andersson are right shots, but it never hurts to have more depth. The only position im worried about at this point is RW, in our entire system its really the only position where we are lacking guys who project as more then bottom 6 players. Of course we could move guys around or from center, but at this point its not really a big hole as I think having three pairs in the top 9 with 3 complimentary players is more then good enough. Top 9 of the future in my opinion.

    Gaudreau-mony-Fill in

    Tkachuk-Bennett-Fill in

    Klimchuk-Janko-Fill in

Obviously klimchuk needs to stop getting injured for that to happen, but at this point having three complimentary guys to go with that group is pretty good.

We just have to wait for our first round pick in 2019 to get a top 4 RW.  :)

  4. I've been thinking the same thing Phoenix.

In fact, If I'm BT, I'm not rushing to make a deal for a goalie... I'd stretch it out longer. I'd wait until the end of the summer if I have to. Make Rutherford sweat. Make him have to have conversations with Fleury, convincing him to play backup or waive his NMC exposing him to a team like Vegas for next season. Or, have conversations with Murray about preparing to be exposed if Fleury refuses to waive his NMC. Make him think about going into the 2016-2017 season with both goalies having that hanging over their heads, and the players in the room knowing the situation. The media attention that would get all year... let Rutherford think about that.

Rutherford wants our 6th overall to save himself from losing one of his 2 goalies for nothing? Ha! Beggars can't be choosers. Put Rutherford in the hot seat and let him sweat it out this whole summer about his goaltending situation and the crappy conversations he's going to have to have with both goalies. His price will come down significantly.

Calgary is sitting pretty being one of, if not the only, team looking for a starter.

Counteroffer 6th round pick in 2017. Or good luck when the expansion comes.

  5. I agree they don't have to trade him and I agree that gives them more leverage in a trade. I estimated it would cost us two seconds and a B prospect to acquire him and I still stand by that.

But I do think trading him makes sense. It's tough to pay your backup 5.5 million and the longer they hold onto Fleury the more his value will go down (especially if he is playing backup.)

A deadline deal makes little sense. Teams don't trade for term at the deadline and teams will have their starter. Plus Pittsburgh will be a contender and trading Fleury in the season is a change / distraction they don't need. Do they really want to risk a narrow window between the season ending and the expansion draft?

Plus, they run the risk of not being able to trade him. He will be a 5.5 million dollar backup next season and teams like Calgary are going to move to another option if he isn't available this summer. He could get hurt. He may be more likely to refuse to waivers is NMC since he isn't facing a year as a backup (Pittsburgh would be forced to move Murray freeing the starter position up.) It would be a shame for Pittsburgh if they lost Murray because they are forced to protect Fleury.

If they don't trade him soon they probably never will.   What team is going to play all of next season and then give up on both of their goal tenders?  What team is going to trade for Fleury then protect him from the expansion?

Pittsburgh is trading from weakness if they don't take a bag of pucks for him they end up with nothing.

Button just put out his list of top 50 NHL affiliated prospects, and we don't have a single player on the list. Most of that is because our top young talent us already playing in the NHL, but I think it also speaks to the lack of top end talent in our system.

Ha.   I came to this board to post this exact comment.

The list is disappointing but true and all future high end talent will go to the big club immediately leaving the farm team without high end talent for quite some time.
